Arrow Those Screeching Budgies!

I've noticed that recently, and even in the past, there have been a lot of question regarding their budgies squaking, or screeching. So, I decided to write something up just to clarify what it is, why budgies do it, and if it can be stopped, all common questions about screeching. So, without furthur ado, let's take a more in depth look into this madness!

What is screeching?
Screeching is a common noise made by mostly all budgies. It sounds almost like an ACK ACK ACK!! sound.

Why is my budgie(s) making this very annoying noise?
Budgies screech for many different reasons. Some of these reasons are instinct, and some aren't.

Instinct
First, you have to know about wild budgies, if you don't already. Wild budgies live in large flocks in the hot outbacks of Australia. Since it is so hot, there is not much water. So, in the wild, when a budgie sees water, it will screech. It is flock calling to its flock saying "Hey! I found water!"
So, what does this have to do with our pet budgies screeching? Well, sometimes when you run your water, you might notice that your budgie is screeching. This is instinct kicking in, calling to its flock that there is water nearby.

Another instinct thing happens near sundown. In the wild, when it is starting to get dark, a budgie will screech. He is basically saying to his flock "Hey! Get back to the tree, it is getting dark out!" Think of it like a mother yelling for her kid to get back before it gets too dark.
So, if your budgie starts to screech as it is getting dark, you will know that it is just instinct.

Non-Instinct
There are other reasons why budgies screech too.
  • It is upset - Sometimes when a budgie gets scared, or it doesn't like something, he will start screeching, basically saying "Hey! I'm upset here!"
  • Attention - With my budgie Finnigan, he will screech of he wants me to come over and play with him, or just to talk to him. This is another reason for screeching
  • Of course, budgies just like making noise, so your budgie may just be screeching for the fun of it. Especially during their "hyper time", they can be loud

Can it be stopped?

Yes it can be stopped. Ways you can stop your budgie screeching are
  • Make a sudden noise, such as a short, yell type thing, crumple paper, drop a spoon on a hardwood floor, etc.
  • Cover the cage, most budgies will stop if their cages are covered
  • Refer to this amazing post by Robin, showing about Positive and Negative Reinforcement and Punishment. Click here to see it.

Of course, you have to remember this: Budgies make noise! You have to expect this kind of behaviour before getting a budgie. It is natural for them to be like this.

Hope this helps. If I forgot something, let me know and I will add it in!

When I read your thread Brandon I immediately thought of Rosie.
When we first got her she would chirp ever so quietly.
Now she's a little older and she's yelling all the time. I think she's spoiled.
She won't stop until Nicky joins her wherever she landed. She demands his attention. And the doting little gent obliges and goes to her.
Suddenly it's quiet again.
If for some reason they're both yelling, they get their little "shut-up food" which is usually a celery top. And...it's quiet again.

Pitchii screeched *a lot* for about a month after I came home from my one month trip home to my sick Mum. Of course Pitchii didn't know the reason (if she knew, I bet she'd be understanding ) and was just mad at me for leaving her since we have such a strong bond
It's almost stopped now - yay! She must realise I wont be leaving her again anytime soon

Our budgie Killer would screech in a few situations and they all had to do with us leaving him alone, or things not being exactly as he wanted them to be.
One was when we went downstirs to watch a movie on the TV, and didn't bring him down. Of course, he could have just flown down because he had the run of the house, but one of us would go up to wherever he was, he'd get on board (head, shoulder, or finger) and we'd bring him down. He liked to have his cage down there as well, and would get seed or water while he watched the tube.
Another time was at bedtime - same thing as above but with us upstairs. If he was already upstairs with us , he'd screech because he wanted his cage up there. (We closed him in the cage at night so we didn't accidentally roll over on him if he decided to roost on us during the night.)
His screeching was always a message to us that something wasn't the way he wanted it, and the screeching always stopped when we figured out what the problem was.

I hope this helps!

I have two hens, so yes, I know squawking... They'll get into little competitions in the evening, imitating each other's patterns of screeches but trying to outdo each other in volume level.
