I'm surprised you can't get good legumes or greens~ i would think that you'd have access to some good stuff (i pick up a lot of my stuff at my asian market), that's too bad nothing is close.
I'm sure cooked oats can be quite nutritious, though i've never fed it cooked yet. For sprouting you need whole oats and not rolled or cut, but i'm sure you could feed cooked if Pitchii will eat it~! That might be a good base to mix in other foods.... i know a lot of people feed couscous.

I may start cooking some of my grains when it gets colder in lieu of sprouting.... because according to TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) theory, cooked foods are more "warming"- but i guess that's a different post, for a different time~!
I was surprised too. I guess if I lived in a city it wouldn't be a problem.
I'm going to try cooked oats and mashed cooked azuki beans. Pitchii loves her mashed veges, so hopefully she'll give it a try
I might end up ordering some things online one day. Not just for Pitchii, but I'd love to have some lentils over winter (hmm will have to check if lentils are ok for budgies?)

I take TCM for my fatigue and it's a 'warming' version... I used to always have feet cold as ice - 3 or 4 four pairs of socks in winter and 1 in summer, but this year my feet were sooo hot! Actually summer was quite unbearable. So I'm a believer in warming foods! Give it a try!

Once again, thanks for an awesome thread

Aren't lentils small legumes~? I feed them to my boys every day (they can be sprouted or cooked- right now they are in my cooked legume mix).... they are in some of my prepackaged sprouting mixes. I use ones that are just packaged for humans from the health food store, and i've also gotten the kind that are packaged for birds.... i've gotten mine local, but they are like the ones here- http://www.sproutpeople.com/seed/kit/birdkit.html... and i've also picked them up on their own and then mixed them into my various mixes.

I'd love to know how Pitchii does with new foods~! I ADORE pictures of birds with messy *mash face*~!

I'm a total believer in TCM therapy. Of course, i am asian... so i grew up with it~! But i also use various holistic modalities with my dog Yippy- including a variety of traditional chinese medicine.
I think i've mentioned that i'm an animal acupressure massage practitioner. I use thermal food therapy with my pup all the time- she has a cold condition too~! She's currently on chinese herbs and she gets acupunture from her holistic vet, and i give her acupressure treatments all the time. *^_^*

I have a chart with the acupoint meridians for a bird too~! But i can't imaging massaging a little budgie~! LoL~! Maybe a large parrot... but even that might be a challenge~!

Ok, just thought i'd add some more pictures that i didn't share in the original post.

This is just a tip on how you can freeze and store your frozen portions if you have larger quantities or just don't want to use ice trays~!

Follow the steps from the OP to the point where you need to freeze

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Once you have all of the veggies chopped up/pureed...

Take a cookie sheet

Line cookie sheet with plastic wrap

Spread veggie mix onto lined cookie sheet

Cover with plastic wrap

Push down plastic wrap to remove air

*FREEZE* Once frozen....

Use a knife to score the frozen mix

Lift the plastic liner up to break along the score

Just continue to break along the score lines

All chunked up

Close up

Store in freezer bags until ready to use

Thank you so much for taking the time to put this together for us!
It has inspired me to do this myself.
Now, if only I ate as well as my pets....

What a wonderful little encyclopeadia for us all.

It reminds me when I used to make baby food up in little pots and have it frozen for my two boys, instead of buying baby food if we were going out.
