homemade seed sticks

just wondering if anyone have recepies to make seed sticks at home. with my lot it will cost me a bit to buy some for them so any help would be appreciated.

Here's a recipe.

Honey and Fruit Seed Sticks
Suit most small pet birds.
Makes around 2-4 sticks
Ingredients
1 cup of budgerigar seed
3 teaspns honey
1 egg
1 cup of finely chopped Strawberries, Banana, Apple(no pips)
Plastic/wooden sticks with hooks

Method
1. Place the Seed, egg and most of the honey in a bowl and mix until sticky.

2. Take a small portion of the mixture and press around stick firmly.

3. Press on fruit (alternatively you can mix the fruits in with the mixture.)

4. Bake in the oven at 200 degrees C for 20-30 minutes until toasted.

5. Brush over excess honey.

6. Place in birds cages and remove stick when eaten.



I haven't actually tried out that recipe yet but I'll have a go at it soon! It sounds good!

Let me know how you get on or if you find a better recipe.

I have used a very similar recipe only with 1 tsp honey instead of three. I put it in mini cupcake holders and my guys love it.

Mine enjoy Cheerios,yes Cheerios.

I get a pipecleaner and put the Cheerio's onto it then lightly spead unsalted peanut butter then cover it in seed......

But you could cover it in whatever your'e bird likes.......

I string up cheerios, and then add enough honey or peanut butter just to have a very thing coat on them so the goodies stick and you can roll them in anything your budgies love like, Millet, Crumbled up Nutra Berries, Thier seeds and or pellets and then hang it from thier cage

mine enjoy it even know only 1 of them have had it , and of course as with any treat you only give it to them on occasion

Ooh, I have to try this. Ive been buying the sticks at the store, they love em. I don't think peanut butter would be to bright with these two though. I could see them sticking to a a wall after eating.

Thanks for the recipe ideas, I've been wanting to cook for my baby lately. I just saw millet seed at the feed store for 69 cents a pound and though how much he would love it!

Make your own "nutri-berry" type treats.

1 C dried fruit of your choice
2 TB coconut
1/2 c old fashioned oatmeal, uncooked
1/4 c seed mix of any kind
1/4 c pellets, your choice
2 TB honey or molasses

Put first 3 items in a blender/food processor and blend. Add the rest of the ingredients--it will be sticky! On a greased or parchment paper lined cookie sheet, roll balls of various sizes and put 1" apart. Bake at 325 degrees for 15-20 min. Check at 15 min to make sure they are not brown, but set. Cool and store in a tightly covered jar.
