Aw! Mortimer to me looks more like a female but I can be TOTALLY wrong! I'm not that great at this so hopefully the more knowledged members can help you out

I would suggest using millet as a way of training. You can also do so by speaking softly to your feathered friend in a calming voice. I waited for my birds to settle in for a week before really doing any taming so they can get adjusted to their surround. All I did was talk to them but thats just me. Some people have their bird step up right away and some take longer.

If you want to cover the cage, maybe you can try doing only three sides? I would leave the front open if it really scares him but cover the back of the cage and the sides. Not all birds like to be covered but I live in Canada so it helps keep them warm and cozy!
