What I do when tempted to buy more birds
So yesterday it happened again. I don't mind going into petstores to look at the budgies because I know I'm strong enough to resist buying more. But, when I went in yesterday, I was hit with something very unexpected. There was a gorgeous little PIED budgie with a deformed foot. I alerted the staff to it but they already knew, it wasn't an injury, but a birth defect. They told me a lady (likely a backyard breeder) had dropped him off because he needed to be rehomed. Neither the breeder or the petstore could sell him for money because he was considered "damaged goods" so he was being given away to a loving home. So here I am, gorgeous little PIED budgie (did I mention he was pied?) with a bad foot just pulling at my heartstrings! I didn't get him because I don't want anymore budgies at the moment, and I probably can't handle more budgies at the moment so instead I bought some things for my current girls.
It definitely helped a lot because personally I get really excited when I have something new for my budgies that is going to benefit them, whether it be a new toy or a health product. So my new game plan for when those huge temptations arrive (which happens very rarely) is to go on a shopping spree. I figure if I think I can afford to bring home a new budgie and pay for new toys and extra vet bills, then I can afford to splurge on my current birds instead. Not only is shopping for budgies fun (in my opinion at least) but it helps draw us away from those temptations to buy more birds. Additionally you could put the money into your emergency vet fund instead to make sure you have plenty of cushion for when those inevitable vet bills arrive. Anyway I just thought I would share my little plan and hope maybe it will help some of you guys out when those urges arise.
