Yes this is typical but since you just got this bird it is a bit too early to be allowing her out of the cage. Also birds generally do not like to be held so perhaps she is trying to escape from that by trying her best to fly. She needs to get used to her new home and you and your family first. It is dangerous right now for her to be trying to fly, and crashing into things is not good for her. She will continue to crash land and not be able to fly well until she molts out the clipped feathers and new ones grow in, it will be a few months before that happens.
