Default Dragon Painting

I just finished a piece for my niece and decided to start on a picture for my nephew. He's 10 years old so I thought I best pick something that is a little more mature. So I went with dragons.

I found a picture of a dragon drawing online that I thought I could model my dragon look on, but I wanted to make it my own so I drew freehand while looking at the image I wanted to copy.

I did a rough outline of the features and then started to fill in the details. I corrected any errors before going over it all in pen.

I then used acrylic paints to colour the dragon in (poor lighting in this image).

This evening I gave him a grey background as a nice contrast and a good neutral colour. This image has been edited to highlight the colours a little more.

I'll be adding a little more detail too it before it's marked as completed but it is mostly done now.

Emma,

That is incredible! I love your talent and creativity.
I'm sure your nephew is going to be ecstatic when he receives the dragon. Will it be a Christmas gift?

That's really well done, you have a great talent. Have you ever thought of doing portraits of some of your birds?

Very nice! I bet it took awhile to get all the shadows and mottled colors on the scales! You certainly included lots of detail! Hopefully your nephew appreciates all the time you put in

I like how you got the general idea from the internet but freehanded it so that it's your own and as such not infringing on copyright. I do this quite a bit, too! It's actually what I did for both the Rudolph painting and the fawn in the woods. I looked at dozens of different pictures to get an idea and then freehanded it. Glad to see others do this too!

That's gorgeous, Emma!

I adore it, I'm fond of drawing dragons myself and have quite a few drawings of them.

I'm sure your nephew will love it! I know I do

Well done!

Daniel and Emily's are not going to have theirs for Christmas, but Isabel will have hers on Christmas day.

I have done some budgies in watercolour pencil before and I did one of Skye in acrylic, but they could be better.

You know, I know it looks like I put loads of effort into the body of the dragon but that is just one shade of green- it's just the way I applied it makes it look like there's multi hues of colour in there, but I just slapped it on! And the shadows weren't too bad either. I did the pencil and pen in the evening and did all the painting of the dragon the next morning. Maybe 5 hour all together on it. I'm just going to varnish the dragon it's self now and it's all done.
