Default Do you need a breeding cage?

So I was wanting to breed my budgies Jack and Sally but I don't have a breeding cage. I know sometimes people cut holes in the bars of the cage but I don't want to permanently damage my cage, so I was wondering if I could just put a breeding box on one of the sliding food access doors? Would that work?

That's what I'll be trying when I give one of my pairs the chance to breed again soon. Last time they were the only pair I had, so they were housed in my massive cage on their own, which has purpose-made doors at the top for nestboxes. But now that cage is full of other budgies, they'll be moved to a smaller cage.

As long as the box is secure enough and the food door can't shut on them, I think it should be fine. Depending on the size of the cage, the parents and chicks may need more room to move once they're weaned, though.

That is the beauty of free choice....

You are free to hang whatever you want from a birdcage....

Just because that little door came with a food bowl in it, doesn't mean that's how it has to be.

I use all my cage doors for whatever...
Sometimes they are feeder doors, sometimes they are bath doors, sometimes they are nestbox doors, and sometimes they are just closed doors.

But keep in mind.... I believe the nestbox should be used with the highest door you have...

ETA: i have also cut my own openings into some of my cages, and then I just use a slider door out of the pile of small parakeet cages I get when I get rescue birds in....

I just cut a hole into mine, and used an old cage door that I wasn't using, and put it over the hole. I used the rest of the cage on my new Bird Box...

I use the doors too. Use a cable tie to keep it open when you hang the nestbox.
