Default Hermes & Aphrodite

Many of you are probably a little surprised to find these names in this breeding journal. You were probably expecting to see one for Echo and Charlie. Believe me, I would've loved that. Their mutations were prime to talk about for my senior project. I think Echo was just a little too young (just over one year). I may try to breed him next year as I still have my heart set on some cinnamons!!

So, let me explain all of this A while back I brought in another hen from the same breeder as Charlie. I wanted to have her handy to pair with Hermes as a backup so I would at least have some chicks and genetics to show for my senior project. I kept her on the down-low as I wasn't sure if she would come to light and didn't want to make confusion introducing another bird only to give her back. After giving Echo and Charlie every opportunity, I handed the reins over to Hermes and Aphrodite. I named her so to keep the Greek mythology theme I have going with Hermes and because, you know, I'm a nerd. I also figured they would need all the help they could get, so I figured naming her after the goddess of love wasn't a bad thing.

"Dee," as I call her, has been the sweetest girl. She took to the nest not even 24 hours after I put it in. Today she laid her first egg!!

Okay, let me introduce you to the two parents. I am super excited to see their chicks; they'll be gorgeous!! Some of you may remember Herm from last summer. Here is his breeding thread: https://www.talkbudgies.com/breeding...rmes-izzy.html

Hermes is a SF Goldenface SF Dominant Pied Cobalt Fullbody Greywing

And a chubby baby picture. I love how he's matured!

I would love confirmation on Dee's mutation. Let me know if I missed anything! Aphrodite is a SF Violet Opaline Cobalt girlie.

Their gorgeous eggo

And the happy couple tonight. Hermes has been a most attentive mate, as always. Such a sweet boy. Would love a Sky Blue SF Goldenfact SF Dominant Pied out of these two.

I'm glad things are going well for them, and hope it continues to do so.

Were they alone as a pair before the nest box went in? How long between then and the first egg?

I think you are right about Dee's mutations. Sometimes a skyblue df violet can look like a cobalt violet, but there should be a difference in the tint on their flights. Skyblues have a teal shade, whilst cobalts have a cobalt/navy tint, which is what I am seeing in the picture I think.

Good luck!

Yes and I made sure they were well adapted and conditioned on a breeding diet. They are on the same supplement I used last year and daily homemade egg food. All this time I've been giving both pairs a breeding diet so I'm glad to at least now just have one to focus on. Definitely cuts down on the amount of eggfood and supplement I go through 9 days after I put the nestbox in she laid her first egg.

I did puzzle over whether I was seeing some sky blue or cobalt. I did settle on cobalt as well but thank you so much for adding some factors into her mutation.

Love the picture of the happy couple, she looks like she is in charge and he is just smitten with her. Can't wait to see the chicks.

That sounds good Katie. If she laid within 2 weeks of being given a nest box it is good they had been kept as a separate pair. It would be a shame to your project if she was producing chicks fathered by another cock!

Hermes and Aphrodite are beautiful together!
How wonderful that she's already produced her first egg.
I'm so looking forward to following your journal.
Blessings to the happy couple!

I know! I was surprised how quickly she took to the nestbox! She must've gotten it how she liked right away and started mating shortly after. Within a few days she was in the nest all day and even now she only reappears once or twice in a day. She's so good about me checking the box too. She'll pop halfway out and scoot right back in as soon as I'm done I'm getting quite attached to her...a very dangerous thing indeed when I have her "on lease" for this project.

Hermes has such a sweet personality but he's kinda clueless He gets along with any bird and has no qualms about personal bubbles. But he's always been such a great mate and father to the chicks. I'm glad this worked out, as this is likely the last clutch I'll have him father before he gets too old.

Oh, yes! That would be a very nasty predicament indeed, when my project is about genetics and how accurately you can predict the offspring. It would be a shame if I didn't even know whose genetics I was dealing with! Neither pair ever came in contact with each other...it's a good thing I had so many cages on hand.

Thank you! She's proving to be a good mum already. 2nd egg is due tomorrow. I get so excited about breeding journals and glad it has some followers

Eggo #2 arrived right on schedule today!

My goal this weekend is to get some good pictures of Herm and Dee together. Hopefully, we'll start seeing some signs of life in Egg #1 at the start of next week (I'm waiting until Day 4-5 to start candling). As many of you know, my threads tend to be picture-heavy so I'm warning you now
