Default The Mad Chewer

Hi Everyone. My Fred is driving me crazy because she has been destroying everything wooden in the cage. She's up to two ladders and three toys. Do you know of anything I can give her to chew instead? I don't know how healthy it is for her to eat all this wood.

She's not interested in cuttle bone or the shredding papers any more. Plus, when I let her have out of cage time she starts trying to chew my furniture and the baseboards. She hasn't been out in two days because I'd rather have controlled destruction, but this is getting ridiculous.

This is normal for hens to do especially when they have reached breeding condition. Is her cere currently dark brown in colour?
Wooden chew toys are a great way for pet birds to satisfy their chewing needs, this what they are for. Once the toys are all chewed, then we will have to replace them with new ones.
You don't need to worry, because the wood is not ingested and your budgie won't get sick over it.

By moving your budgie into a completely different cage, you can be successful in throwing her out of breeding condition (this change can make the cere revert to creamy white colour). By doing so, her hormones will be more under control and her chewing can decrease.

Hi, my Comet absolutely buzzes off chewing and playing with metal. By this I mean his swing, chains that hang his toys, his bells and especially my thick chain when he's on my shoulder. I think he likes the taste and the fact that no matter how much he pulls at them they don't disappear.

I always have plenty of kabobs around for chewing, I use the original size
see this link
Bird Toys: Bird Kabob all natural yucca bird toys at Drs. Foster and Smith

You should be able to buy them at any major chain pet store also.

She's not in condition, her cere is still blue with white nostrils. I know she's coming up to be about six months since her grey irises are coming in. She's just having fun chewing. Thank you for the advice!

I have toys with metal chains too but Fred goes right for the wooden ones. Thanks for the suggestion!

I will look into getting some! I wish I posted this sooner since I just placed an order with them. Thank you for the help!

I agree, keep giving little Fred lots and lots of wood toys she can shred to her heart's desire

Keep us posted

Wooden toys are great for budgies and I'm glad to hear Fred enjoys chewing them.
I always consider a toy a "success" when it is destroyed quickly.
Fred may enjoy chewing up the little wicker wreaths from Michaels. My guys love them!
They are very inexpensive and I always keep a bunch on hand along with the kabobs.

Excessive licking and chewing of metal can indicate a vitamin deficiency and, if the metal is not budgie-safe can also lead to Heavy Metal Poisoning.

I'm putting some of their least favorite toys back in the cage in hopes that Fred will chew those up instead. I'm just glad that she's biting the wood and not me, for a change. She gets offended when I go to make her step up. She wants to do things on her own terms and she's being a huge grouch lately. I'm going to buy her a unibrow and trashcan for Halloween.

I was annoyed at her for doing it because I thought it would cause a blockage in the crop, but now I know that it's okay, I don't mind as much.

She really does enjoy chewing them and then scaring everyone into flying around when they drop to the floor. She has expensive taste though. The cheap toys aren't good enough to destroy.

You are always trying to get me to spend money! I just got a coupon from Michael's for 20% off an entire purchase, so I'm probably going to head up there this weekend. I can just imagine the mess she is going to make. I remember twigs falling out of the large wreaths when I was making a project with them. Imagine what it's going to be like when Fred is actively trying to destroy them.

I will also go to Petco and pick up some kabobs.
