If I were you, I would remove the mirror from the cage so Kiwi doesn't become obsessed with her reflection. When I only had Jimmy, he used to sit in the same spot and look in the mirror all the time.
The mirror might confuse her so I'd remove it and let her adjust to being by herself. And keep some gentle sounds playing for her, so she doesn't just sit quietly in silence. Try and spend some time with her, as much as you can.

I think the urn is a sweet idea. xx

Smile Depressed

It seemed like we were turning the corner in getting her well. It really touches my heart. Is Kiwi eating-drinking? I would use the first aid electrolyte and ACV. Pre soak the millet spray and hang it near the perch she likes to sit on. The depression will weaken both your and Kiwis immune system. There is a womans Super Multi B vit which will support your nerves and brain It really does help. If you can not find that specifically a good multiVit of B's that provides more than the minimal is good for stress Each should be several hundred times the min and B 12 1000 mcg time release would help. B vits are water soluble and very hard to over dose. The Guardian angel For birds / electrolyte will have extra Bvits. To encourage your bird to eat. This is the very first step in first aid after Stabalize a bird and calling the vet. Be alert as Kiwi s immune system is vulnerable. Weight your bird daily until you are sure she is eating. The shells from millet spray is a quick tell and the droppings. The procedures for Aztec will work for Kiwi. It is a real shock.

Finding your way through and caring for Kiwi's daily needs and you taking extra vits will give you something positive to do. I try to have some sort of memorial to honor our Budgie Angel . You will know -some small token to bring you smiles and good memories. The electrolyte tickles the hunger signal Kiwi needs to keep her motor running and her little body warm. Sitting high may be because her body is cold because she is not eating. the ceiling will catch and hold heat in the room. The electrolyte can work miracles. You may want to give first 2 or 3 drops by beak and change the water daily. Use the brooder lamp at night. To help keep her warm. Blessings, J A
Send PM any time you have questions. This challenge will make you a stronger budgie parent. You will already have the first aid skill so you can help others in the future.

I am not sure if kiwi is drinking, I was able to get her to take a few bites of millet when I held it near her.. but that is it, there were no other seed shells on the floor of the cage. she is still having normal droppings. I will try to get her to have some with electrolytes as well.. I had some hanging but she has not touched it.. maybe she will allow me to hand feed her.

I think we had a break through! I played some of her favorite songs.. she did not chirp along as usual.. but she did sit and cock her head as I sang to her. by offering her millet by hand she was not interested.. I have heard others say to allow the budgie to watch you eat the food.. so I just set the millet spray near her (shes on top of her cage currently) and leaned over pretending to take munches out of it! she came over and started munching away! even while she was eating I asked if I could have more and bent down and pretended to eat.. she kept eating as well!

Lacey that is a very good idea and I have heard of this to. I have also pretended to eat to show my budgie to eat. I couldn't get Indi to eat his veggies when he was a baby and I pretended to eat it and then he started eating his veggies after a while now he loves them. I am happy that your method is working.... Give kiwi a kiss from us....

That's fantastic to hear, Lacey Keep it up, a little or however much both of you can handle, every day. The first week is always the hardest when they are calling for their mate and being listless and withdrawn. Singing to Kiwi and playing something familiar to her is a positive step. Eating with her or pretending is also an excellent move to encourage motivation to eat and drink.

I don't know what her normal diet is but I am assuming it is seed, and millet to motivate her. Unfortunately, millet cannot be her only source so the next three weeks, in my opinion, are critical. You are her flock and she is going to be looking toward you for support. Monitor her eating and drinking. Continue to use encouragement with millet and other foods. She may not be too interested in greens but try in a week's time to see how she takes to it.

Most importantly, and I do not know what type of water dish you have, but I use a plastic 3 inch clip on bowl that I can take off and physically offer it to my birds so that they drink. Any water that I now give my birds is first boiled for a few minutes and then cooled during the day. They get water twice a day. I also add Prime Vitamin Supplement to their water which is a powder (or other powdered vitamin/electrolyte that you may use yourself) and mix it in. I gave it to all my birds religiously, everyday twice a day for two weeks solid and also physically offered it to them to see them drink when they wanted to. If they drank on their own, which they do, then that was a bonus, but at least I knew they would drink. Now, they get it once a day with just regular treated (boiled and cooled) water at other intervals.

My main concern, at the time this was happening, was my budgie Zucchini. He stopped eating, stopped drinking, also started molting, but also was severely depressed with the loss of his mate and buddy hen that he liked. He was crushed and before I knew it, he was on the brink. He would just look at me and then turn his head into his little feathers and sleep and sleep and sleep. Mostly, though, he was mourning.

I had to take drastic measures with the Vitamin Supplement, I focused more on his regular diet and only introduced a small amount of millet to fatten him up because he lost a lot of weight. I offered him food, drink until he started to accept my attention. I would talk to him and eat my meals with him, show him his food, hold it for him to nibble from -- you name, I did it, and little by little the vitamin supplement started to kick in.

But, what really helped with everything else that was done, and I kid you not -- Youtube Budgie Videos streamed to the TV so I could fullscreen and they could watch and chirp. These videos brought Zucchi and my other budgies back. They love videos by BirdSpyAus, Galactic Glory, Penguintastic and many others. They also love nature shows and the film Australia: land of parrots. They really like the visual and sound because my birds like to watch TV. They are cage - potatoes

It is only the first week, so I would take a wait and see approach before introducing budgie sounds. I take it that Kiwi is now your only budgie, so, if in a few months you are thinking about getting a new addition, then that is another step to making little Kiwi perk up again. It is really up to you and how you feel and what you think is best. My budgies still have a flock so they kind of hang with each other. However, the videos are a great help, so hopefully that may or may not be useful to you. It certainly stimulates my budgies in such a way that they eat, drink, play, preen, fly around and chirp like crazy.

Thank the goddess for budgie videos!!!

I do have one question.. she will not move.. she sits at a mirror and stares at herself. If this is how she wants to grieve should I just let it happen? I left it in there because she really loved to play with it with Aztec..

I thought about purchasing something like this and putting some of Aztecs feathers in it.. and hanging it by the window.

Lacey that a great idea about the urn necklace! I actually started looking through them all myself. I now want to get one for my two cats and Holly. I still have her clipped flights in a baggy in my coffee table. The one you linked is beautiful and I think she'd like that very much.

Oooh that's amazing! See what a little encouragement from momma will do? Good for her for finally starting to eat again, and good for you for coming up with such a solution!!!

thank you for all of the ideas! I will definitely look into the videos to play for her after a few more days go by! I would like to update that today Kiwi is starting to chatter with the music again .. we like to listen to the golden oldies station.. and she absolutely loves "In the Summertime" by Mungo Jerry and all of Lou Christies songs.. I think its because there are bells and he sings very high pitched. I am smiling as I type this because she is so chirpy right now!

I could not get them to eat veggies before.. I will admit I stopped trying for a while which was a big no no on my part.. they did like clementine and kiwis when offered. Now that she has me to focus on maybe I can get her to try her veggies because now it is me she will want to impress (hopefully!) I think I will go to the market and get some fresh broccoli and sprouts as I have read these are usually big hits and look more like seed.

It is wonderful to hear that Kiwi is perking up!!! Yay Team! Taking care of her will keep you so busy you will feel better as well do not forget your Time release multi B vits. You will be getting same support boost as Kiwi. I have seen birds respond in as little as 15 min. Good for you that she is responding.

Smile update on kiwi

Today when I came home I was very excited for what I saw! Kiwi had eaten not only millet but from two food dishes.. now of course only seed (were still working on veggies and pellets.. those go untouched) Different kinds of seed hulls all over! Very excited someone has their appetite back, I think I will start using millet spray only as treats again now!! I also I can tell that she has been moving about her cage by her droppings, they were not all in one spot as they had been the past couple of days.

We have started reading a book together and she watches me as I read.. now when I talk to her sometimes I get a little chirp! I feel like I am back to step one on gaining a birds trust as now it is I she will be bonding with but that is ok!

that's all for now!

thanks again to everybudgie for their support! I think we are moving in a positive direction!
