i've had A.J. almost a year now and even though he looks a lot like my bam-bam (who died two years a go) he is not like bam-bam at all. Bam-bam loved to interact with me the bond we had was a good one. But A.J. does not want to interact with me at all. He will shake feet, and step up, and will eat millet from me but that is it. He comes in and out of his cage on his own. He loves to play and talk to his toys.he seams happy but i'm going to get him a male friend.do you think this is a good idea? He sees my two tiels together all the time. And thought he would like a friend of his own. The baby is still in the nest, so if this is not a good idea i can still back out, the bird is free. I have the extra cage.this is A.J.
AJ is a cute little fellow and it sounds as though he is quite happy as a solo budgie.
How much time are you around him daily?
Does AJ try to "make friends" with the cockatiels or does he seem happy playing on his own?
I think it's important to realize that getting another budgie is no guarantee it will be another "Bam Bam".
If you plan to house the new budgie and AJ together after quarantine, AJ may lose all interest in interacting with you if he bonds well with the new bird. Flock dynamics change each and every time a bird is added or subtracted from a flock.
Most male budgies easily accept another male and they become best buddies. However, one must always be prepared and willing to deal with the eventuality that two birds will not get along and be able to house them separately on a permanent basis should that happen.
Faerybee yes A.J. does not pay any attention to the tiels.i 'm home with the birds all day long 7 days a week. And yes i know there is a possibility that A.J. will not like the new bird, if that happens i will keep the new bird in the quarantine cage its big enough for one. Plus A.J. is not really bonded to me at all. He just seams like he does not need people company he is just happy to sit in his cage and play and talk to his toys or the bird in the mirror. This why i was going to get him a friend of his own so they can just be birds and hopefully bond to each other.
