Default New Bird Sitting at Bottom of Cage

I just got my new budgie, and I'm a little worried. I've read that it's perfectly normal for your budgie not to move for the first few days, as it is adjusting. However, I've also read that budgies sitting at the bottom of their cages is a bad sign. He is not puffed up, just sitting motionless. Is this cause for worry? Should I try to move him onto a perch?

Your budgie is just frightened right now and trying to move him or her onto a perch won't help. They will move when they want too.

Have you got three sides of the cage covered? This will help your new budgie to feel safer as they get used to their new home.

Take a look at this sticky to help you get used to what your bird is going through right now.

Hi Jodie and to Talk Budgies

Therm has given you excellent advice.

In a week or so, once Bunnie is all settled in, we'd love to see some pictures.

Please take the time to read through all of the How To Guides, the FAQs and the stickies located at the top of each section of the forum.

You'll find most of your basic questions about budgies and caring for them will have been answered after you've read through all of them.

To upload full-sized pictures with the proper orientation, please use a photo-sharing service such as PhotoBucket and follow the steps in these instructions:

By the way, all photos entered in any of our forum contests must be a full-size photo and not a thumbnail attachment so it's good to know how to upload them!

If you have any questions after reading through everything, please be sure to ask!

Glad you decided to join us and looking forward to seeing you around the forums.

Hi Jodie and to Talk Budgies!

Therm has given great advice

With time, your little one will garner the courage to fly up to a perch During the necessary 2-week "settling in" period, it's important not to try and touch your budgie at all, as s/he will still be very scared.

To help him/her settle into your home, apart from covering the cage and playing soft music in the background, once your budgie is moving around and has discovered how to perch, talk to him/her softly a few times a day so they can begin to get used to your presence

Meanwhile, it's great to have you here with us! What's your budgie's name?

Be sure to read through the forum's many resources on the best of budgie care, including the Budgie Articles and "stickies" (threads "stuck" to the top of each subforum for easy reference) to ensure you're up to date on everything. If you have any questions after reading through everything, be sure to ask as we'd love to help!

Cheers!
