Default "digging" in his food bowl wasting all his food and making a mess

Recently Dicky has been spending his eating time almost digging in his food bowl and by doing so scattering his food everywhere and wasting it.

I dont really care about the waste but the mess is really annoying, is there any reason he would be digging like this?

It even looks like hes leaning really far to get right into the corner of the bowl which is awkward so hes definitely meaning to aim for this area instead of taking the easy seed from the top.

From what I have seen with mine (especially the older/adult male budgies) is that they mostly do it out of playful mischief. You can try to limit the mess and waste of food by getting a different style of food container that has a top on where only the head will fit in for strictly feeding purposes.
There are some food containers that have a mirror attached and for obvious reasons it's also best to stay away from those.

Smile Digging

Hi, Welcome,

If your budgie is young, it is probably continuing the digging and cuddling in a nest as many young budgies do. Some of our little guys have piled 4 high in a feeding dish that was first emptied of all of the food and yes they kick the food all over.

I suggest putting a cage skirt on the bottom of the cage at least 6 or 8" high.
There are mesh see through or solid cotton types available in many pets stores and also on line. Also place the feed dish in the center of a tray with lower sides to help catch and preserve the food for budgie to forage when it becomes hungry, There are a number of clear plastic feeding dishes that prevent at least some of the mess. God made birds like budgies to replant the earth with the excess seed that is not consumed in the wild. This quite normal behavior for many budgies. We humans just do not understand how
important this little job is to replenish the plants of the earth for future generations of budgies and humans.

Blessings, Jo Ann

You've been given excellent advice.

You can put a sheet under your cage which will catch all the "mess".
Simply move the cage, pick up the sheet and take it outdoors to shake it off.
I have one under my biggest cage in the living room and it works quite well.

I have a really wonderful cage for this to contain the mess. It's called a Vision Bird Cage. We love this cage. You can find on amazon in various sizes. It has a see through plastic wall all around bottom part of cage to keep the mess in. I got it a year or so ago for our oldest boy and I've never had to vacuum seeds off the floor since.

But that doesn't help the wasting food situation. Like some other members suggested, get those seed bowls with a cover. My youngest female kicked all her seeds out when we first got her and this has been the only thing to save her from still doing it.

Good luck!

mine were doing this for quite awhile....that was till I changed the food. Apparently they didn't like the food I was giving them, three days now and no mess or digging.

Haha I actually do have a dish with a cover, and the opening is pretty narrow. But Hermes still manages to spill seed everywhere. The best way I can describe it is that he "scoops" it out with his beak and brings it over the edge. I've tried to fill the dish halfway, but he still finds a way to get it out and spill They're determined little things.

Best of luck!
