Question Constant Loud Chirping

Hi All -- First I'd like to express my appreciation for this forum, as it has helped me many times find answers to things I've been experiencing with my two budgies Rikki (f) and Charley (m). Now Rikki has started chirping throughout the day, rather loudly and constantly (every 15 to 30 seconds). I keep my guys in separate cages but next to each other during the day except during some supervised out-of-the- cage time. She usually stops the chirping when out of the cage. Could this be a hormonal thing she is experiencing? She is otherwise healthy and eats well. Thank you.

Hi, Dan --

It sounds as though Rikki is expressing her displeasure at being inside her cage and vocalizing it as loudly as possible.
(I have a lovebird that does the same thing)

Perhaps you might try giving her some out-of-cage time in the morning, then put her back in the cage for a few hours and give her a bit more out-of-cage time in the late afternoon/early evening.

Doing this on regular and consistent schedule will help her to learn there are times she will be allowed out and other times when she must entertain herself within the cage.

Does she play with any of her toys when she's in the cage?
If not, spend a little time each day playing with them yourself and talking to her while you do so. Make excited and happy sounds and see if you can peak her curiosity so she'll become interested in trying them herself.

Best wishes!

Thank you for the suggestions. As always, you are most helpful. I suspect you are right and she is impatient to get together with her playmate. I've also rotated some of her toys in and out of her cage, because on reflection, I realize she has not been terribly engaged with her present arrangement.
