Default Biting out of fear or curiosity?

Hi everyone!

I have been working with my four, 6 week old baby budgies on a daily basis and they are really good about stepping up and don't mind being pet....except one....I don't understand him. He is the best out of all of them at stepping up and doesn't seem to mind being touched but it's almost like he gets this "not-so-nice" spurt. I could have one of my fingers near his body or face and he just starts biting it! I can tell it's not a nibble but it's not breaking skin either....it's uncomfortable. He does this sometimes when I try to remove him from his cage as well but then he stops! I have tried twisting my finger (to make him loose balance but not fall off) as well as lightly blowing on the back of his head and he has gotten use to that and sometimes just continues to bite.

I don't approach him in a threatening way, nor do I cry out or get angry when he does this.....How do I get this behaviour to stop!? Is this just a phase??

Your budgie is telling you he does not want you to be bothering him at that point in time.

It's important that you respect his space when he wants to be left alone.

Taming and Bonding with a budgie is a process of helping the budgie learn to trust you but it also means you have to respect the budgie's wishes as well.
Learning to read and understand your birds' body language will go a long way as you work with them.

Additionally, it is important you only use positive reinforcement techniques when interacting with your budgies.

Thank you faerybee for your response, he even will present the biting once he is on my hand. For example, sometimes when I go to get him out of his cage he seems ok with it and then I let him sit on my finger for a few minutes without touching him and he just does it. Is this his way of saying, " ok, i'm over this now put me back?"

At the point when he is biting when he is sitting on your hand he may be trying to show his dominance over you, or it's possible he's tired of being held and wants you to put him down so he can do something else.

Your budgie is a little young to be going through puberty yet, but when they hit that age and their hormones kick in, they often become very "bitey" during that time.

So should I make my sessions with him brief and positive? Like take him out to feed him something he likes then put him away?

I don't know how long your sessions with him are currently.
I'd suggest 10 minutes to start.
You can then work backward in two minute increments if necessary.
