Default Since I've taken away the mirrors....

I have really noticed a change in Jasper. He is so much more attentive and watches me a lot. When I get up close and talk to him he will open and close his beak. Not sure what that means, but over all he is a much calmer little guy.
Thank you Farey Bee for suggesting to remove the mirrors. It's been a week and the diffence is like night and day!

That's great to hear! That means that he's observing his environment more now and is more open to interacting with you as he's realized you're his real "flock mate" now

What great news

You're very welcome, Kathy.

I'm very glad to hear that Jasper is now interacting with you and you've noticed a beneficial change in his personality as well.

Since he's opening and closing his beak when you talk to him, he may be practicing silently so he can mimic your speech.
Start by repeating a specific word or phrase to him frequently throughout the day when you talk with him and hopefully he'll pick it up before long.

It's good to know what the beak opening means, both my budgies tend to do this a lot when I talk, read, sing to them. Now I know why!

Kathy, that's great to hear I didn't know mirrors had such an effect on budgies though, to be honest

Oh is that what it is?! Lulu and Cosmo do that opening-closing sometimes when I'm telling them what pretty girls they are and I always wondered what that meant.

Thanks everyone for the info. I personally had no idea about mirrors and budgies. Growing up we always had one or two budgies at a time. They were hand tamed and allowed to fly around our house on a daily basis. Our budgies always had mirrors in their cage. I never gave it a second thought. It's good to know he is trying to mimic me when he moves his beak. Mica seems to be a lot calmer if the two. She is just a sweetheart their natural wood perch arrived today. Mica perched on it right away. Jasper is still not sure. I'm so happy for all the help and knowledge I have received from all of you
