Exclamation How to play with a budgie?

Hi this is my first post on here so sorry in advance if i do something wrong.

I have a female budgie, she will step up happily and will come out sometimes. When she comes out though she just goes around the room for a bit and then i put her back in the cage.
How am i supposed to play with her? she doesn't really do anything when shes out other than run around.
also how do i get her to come out easier she wont step up and let me take her out she gets scared and hops back on her perch. i just open her cage door and let her come out when she wants but she doesn't always come out. Thanks!

Welcome to the forum.

The best thing you can do is open her cage and let her choose if she wants to come out. If you make her come out she won't enjoy herself as she didn't want to be out in the first place. If she feels the need to come out, she will do.
Just imagine if someone tried to make you leave your house when you just want to sit indoors.

Do you have a play gym for her? Or perches on hr cage for her to sit on?
What type of toys do you provide for her in her cage?
Budgies like to chew on soft woods like balsa or shreddable toys like kabobs, so she will probably like to play with these. If she is interested in you, you can play with these toys and she might come over to you to see what you are doing.
If she's never had toys before don't expect her to be interested straight away. A lot of budgies find new things scary and if she seems afraid, you should keep the toy somewhere that she can explore it on her terms.
Some budgies just aren't as playful as others.

My flock are let out daily for out of cage time and I have some budgies who may only come out once a week.

Hi there and to the forums!

You've been given some great advice by Therm It's important to let your little one come out of the cage when she feels comfortable doing so! You can put a perch on the outside of her cage to be sure she feels comfortable sitting outside her cage, if she'd like.

Be sure to read through the forum's many Budgie Articles and "stickies" (threads "stuck" to the top of each subform for easy reference) to stay up to date on all the best practices for caring for budgies. If you have any questions after reading through everything, be sure to ask as we'd love to help!

We look forward to seeing you around the forums, and your budgie, too

Cheers!
