Lightbulb Budgie Fear Observation

I was rearranging bird toys today and it really dawned on my that Budgies take a little bit longer to get used to new toys than my tiels. It's like the processor in those tiny brains of theirs works slower. Meanwhile, in most cases, I can stick a new toy into my tiel's cages with minimal fuss. New holder for millet? No sweat. If they're very wary of it, my tiels will avoid it for a few hours. If it's REALLY big and scary, I'll hang it on the side of the cage below their perching height so they can get used to it. Meanwhile I have a new bowl/feeder in the budgie cage and for 3 days they've avoided that side of the cage. (I have other bowls in the cage that they're using. It's just this large feeder they're avoiding...).

It could be my budgies are still new to my home and aren't sure of my cage routine. They've only been in my home a week and a half. I don't think their toys were changed often, so that could be part of the problem?

What are your thoughts on this situation?

Sounds like the were used to the cages being filled the way it was and now they are wary of this new bowl. They will become used of it in a short time.

It feels so odd having a bird be afraid of a bowl for 3 days, LOL. But I believe you are correct. I just have to give them time

Many budgies are afraid of new toys, perches, and other cage accessories.
Putting them outside the cage for a few days within eyesight of the budgies, then moving them to the side of the cage on the outside before introducing them into the cage will help.
