Default Budgie Sleeps with Tail in Water

Hello,

I've had my parakeet for two months and she sleeps with just the end of her tail in her water bowl. She's very healthy and active otherwise but I was wondering what the problem could be if she continues to sleep with her tail in water every night. I was out the bowl twice a day and replace her water frequently.

I had another parakeet before her for seven years and she used to sleep vertically on the bars of her cage so this wasn't an issue at all.

Any insight would be helpful thanks!

Hi, to Talk Budgies. What is your budgie's name? It sounds like she needs to have her sleeping perch moved to a different location (if the water container can't be moved).

To familiarize yourself with our website and take advantage of the educational resources here, please read through the Stickies threads at the top of each section (healthcare, diet, behavior, training and bonding, etc), browse through the Articles, and read the links that FaeryBee sent you upon registration. There you'll find answers to many common questions. If you still have questions, let us know and we'll be happy to help.

We also love to see pictures!

Hi! to Talk Budgies

How large is the cage Qwerty is housed in?
Is the cage overcrowded?
Does she have a swing?

The very minimum size cage recommended for one budgie is 18"x18"x18" but bigger is always better as long as the spacing between the bars is no more than 1/2".

Moving either the perch or the water dish seems to be an easy fix.

Please take the time to read through the Site Guidelines, all of the How To Guides, the FAQs, the Budgie Articles and the stickies located at the top of each section of the forum.

Truly, the very BEST advice anyone can offer you is to take the time to read ALL of the stickies throughout the various Talk Budgie forums as well as the Budgie Articles we have posted.

These are great resources for Talk Budgie members and have a wealth of reliable information which will assist you to learn the best practices in caring for your budgies for their optimal health and well-being.

I just wanted to toss in switching to a water bottle might help with the tail-in-the-water scenario. Depends on how desperate you are to relieve the situation, LOL.

Good luck to you

I don't think this is an issue and that your girl is choosing to sleep with her tail in the water just her favourite sleeping perch location is too close to her water dish.

I suggest a rearrange of the cage but there's nothing to be concerned about.

Hi there and to Talk Budgies!

I agree with the advice above, most likely moving her sleeping perch or the dish (or both!) will help with that

I look forward to meeting your little budgies soon!

Meanwhile, be sure to look through the links provided above, which include the forum's many Budgie Articles and "stickies" (threads "stuck" to the top of each subform for easy reference) to stay up to date on all the best practices for caring for budgies. If you have any questions after reading through everything, be sure to ask as we'd love to help!

I look forward to seeing you around the forums!

Cheers!
