Hi,

We have two male budgies Pepper(blue) and BB(grey). We've had Pepper for almost two years and BB for about 9 months. They generally get on alright though they will fight when Pepper wants space and BB doesn't want to give it to him, other than this the only other time they use to fight was when they were on their swing, Pepper sometimes lost his balance and ended up hanging upside down and BB would peck at his feet until he dropped.

About a week ago we got a new cage, about double the height of their old one. Since being in it they've been fighting constantly and Pepper has been forced from the top two perches at least a dozen times and BB will actually get his foot on his chest to force him off.. They have two food bowls and water bowls, the top two perches are at equal height and fifty percent of the time they can sit up there quiet happily together. Why are they suddenly fighting so much?

I think, perhaps your budgie boys had worked out who was top bird and what the rules of the old cage were.
Now, they're in a new setting, and the lines are being redrawn.
I think you need a second swing in the cage (even if it means that you need to remove something to make space for it).
Keep a close eye on them and be prepared to temporarily separate them if the fighting escalates.

Hi! to Talk Budgies

In addition to the fighting you describe, I have some concerns over your cage.

I can't tell from the picture, what is the spacing between the cage bars? The space should never be greater than 1/2".

I see you have wooden dowel perches.
These can lead to pressure sores.

It would be much better for Pepper and BB if you replace them with natural wood perches of varying diameters.

Please refer to the information in the link below for the types of perches and toys that are best for your budgies.

How much out-of-cage time do your birds get on a daily basis?

I would recommend you add at least one more swing as JRS indicated -- or even more if you can.
All of my bird cages have one swing per bird plus extra(s).

If, after rearranging the cage with better perches, etc. there is ongoing bullying, then you may need to consider separating the two budgies into individual cages for awhile.
