So it's been a little over 2 weeks since I brought Niko home. He seems comfortable in his new space, but he doesn't move around a whole lot and doesn't chirp a lot unless I leave the room (he does chirp with me in here but not as much). Anyone have any thoughts on this? I'm concerned because all he seems to do is sit on a perch and eat.
Two weeks isn't that long and he's probably getting used to the changes still. There's no need to be concerned so early on.
It's good that he seems settled in general though.
What toys does Niko currently have in his cage?
There are a lot of different types of toys and budgies like different types. try different types of toys until you find something that catches his interest. Also remember that he likely has never seen a toy before and might not know what it is.
Does he have a swing? Budgies tend to really enjoy a swing and can spend a lot of time swinging on one. Try and get one that has two arms rather than one that hangs from the middle as this will give Niko a straight forward swinging motion and the others can be a little more scary for a first timer. :O
Do you keep music or the TV on for him?
noise makes budgies feel safe. Keep something on in the background and he should be a little more vocal. However, even if he isn't, it's nothing to be concerned about. All budgies are different and some to tend to be on the quiet side.
Thanks guys. To answer Therm's questions, he has a swing, I play a radio for him all day (he seems to like classic rock), and he has a wide variety of toys, shredders, acrylic, bells, and stuff like that. How can I get him to play with toys? Ive tried bribing him by putting food on the toys but he's still not really playing
