Hello! I have become a bit concerned about behavior at bedtime with my budgies. There do the usual bickering to pick out their sleepy spots, but I have noticed a new behavior...
Bed time routine: Usually I slowly turn lights off in the room. I have to lamps, one big and one small. I turn the big one off first when it's bed time. And afraid of shocking them with sudden darkness, I leave the small one on. Then about 5 minutes later I cover their cage but leave the front flap open. And again about 5 mins later, I turn the small lamp off. (I leave the flap open part way because they get several night frights throughout the night if it's pitch blank in their cage. And I have a nightlight on for them.)
Now my concern... I just noticed that a couple of them (it is never the same birds) will hang out on the front of the cage. I assume they will find their way to a perch eventually and I go to sleep. However, I found that not to be true. This morning I woke up at 3am to use the bathroom, and I glanced at the front of the cage, and they were still hanging there! With their beaks and claws. I'm assuming they were there all night!
Is there an issue with that? I just can't imagine them being able to sleep like that! Feedback is very much welcome and appreciated! Thank you!!!

Have you noticed any respiratory problems or changes in their droppings, lethargy, fluffed up etc.
do they do this during the day?
My concern would be that they might be experiencing a respiratory problem and sleeping like this might be a way of supporting their airway.
No, no changes in any of the above. They don't do that during the day. They are active as usual! They climb up and down the cage walls but that is during their active/play times. They sit on perches as usual during the day.
