Exclamation Budgies started eating newspaper!

Hi guys,

So I place newspaper above my budgies cage grate just to try to prevent them getting their feet stuck in it one day. Last night I noticed Ollie, my male budgie eating at the news paper. He created a little hole. He's not been shredding it, he ate it! This morning he was working on his hole and Daisy my female budgie started copying him. Neither of them are in breeding condition, by the way. I know this is dangerous for them.

I was just wondering why do you think this is? They have toys in their cage and I've recently added another, though they have not investigated it yet. I was thinking of getting like a plastic place mat to place above the grate instead?

Thanks,
Bee

Bee,

You're going to need to move the newspapers to below the grate in the tray under the circumstances. Many budgies never bother the newspapers on top of the grate but obviously Ollie is one that will.

Your budgies will not get their feet caught in the grate.

I would not recommend putting a plastic place mat on the grate.
If Ollie is eating the newspaper, then he'll try to eat the plastic as well.
Make sure they have plenty of safe shredding toys to keep them busy.

Best wishes!

I have had just a grate at the bottom of the cage and never had issues with feet getting caught. This would be a major flaw in bird cage design if it were the case.

Hi Deborah,
I feel reluctant to move the newspaper as I know it is a possibility for them to get their feet stuck if they have a night fright or such. I hadn't heard of putting newspaper above their grate, but a friend warned me that I should, because her budgie had a night fright one time and his foot was incredibly injured.

If I see Ollie eat the newspaper again or notice a hole in it then I'll have to make that move.

Thanks for replying

I honestly feel that in the case of a night fright, the grate is no more of a hazard than the other cage walls, roof and cage accessories. But if you're not reassured, you could decide to just put a sheet of newspaper on top of the grate when you cover the cage at night and then remove it when you uncover them.

My female budgie had never bothered doing that too but one day she noticed that she could destroy it the next morning I saw it all ripped and in pieces. After that I never bothered putting papers again on top of the grate...take also note that im using medical sheets papers so it's texture is like toilet paper lol

Bee, I also back up what everyone else said here in regard to getting caught in the grate. As JRS said, the grate poses no more or less of a hazard than the rest of the cage bars. Your friend's unfortunate accident with her budgie I have to say, was a freak occurrence and not at all a common one .

In decades of bird ownership, I've always used grates and never used paper on top of it. Remember how nothing in this world can be 100%... The grate in a bird's cage is as safe as 'anything' else in life...

Bee,

While I use newspaper on top of the bottom grate in the cage, I would have no hesitation in removing it immediately if my budgies were eating the paper.

My birds play on top of their cage every single day. Walking on the top of the cage is no different than walking on the bottom grate in the cage.

My budgies are quite active and I have no worries at all about any of them getting their feet caught in the cage bars (or grate).

Hmm okay thank you Deborah. I came home tonight and checked on them, they had been at it again so i'm taking it out now. It's a shame. But it's okay. I'll just make sure to keep a light on when they're covered if i'm not in the room (which I do anyway).

Thanks
