Default How can I know if my budgie is lonely?

Niko doesn't seem unhappy, but I'm worried about him nonetheless. School is crazy, and I don't have as much time as I would like to spend with him. I'm really wondering at this point if he would be happier with a friend. I would wait a little while to get another budgie if I was going to anyway, but I would like your thoughts on the matter.

How much time per day are you spending with him?
Does he enjoy playing in his cage on his own?
Is he active, chirping and playing when you are there?
Does he get out-of-cage time on a regular basis?

If you are spending an hour or two interacting with him each day and he has music/TV when you are not around then Niko is probably just fine.

If you decide to get another budgie in the future, please be sure to observe quarantine for the new budgie.

Quarantine means housing the new bird in a different cage in a different room than the current bird (as far away from the room the current bird is in as possible) for a period of 35-45 days.

Budgies mask symptoms when they are ill. Symptoms may not show up for over two weeks.
Often you will not even realize your bird is not well. Many budgie illnesses are airborne which is why you need to quarantine your new bird in a completely different room.

It is also a good idea to always take a new budgie in to see an Avian Vet for a "well-birdie" check-up. This allows you to develop a good relationship with the vet and the vet can establish a baseline for your bird in case of any future illnesses or injuries.

5. Vet Expense and Housing

Do you have the time, finances, etc to devote to another bird?

Are you ready, willing and able to house the new budgie separately on a permanent basis if it does not get along with your current bird after quarantine?

I'm in school from 8-3/5 every weekday, then usually I come home and spend time with him until I cover him for the night at 8, so around 3-5 hours, sometimes more. His cage door is generally open for the duration of that time, but he doesn't come out. He's only come out of his cage twice completely on his own.
So.... active and playing. He likes foraging in things sometimes, and will be chatty if I'm being loud (playing a video or show in addition to the radio), but otherwise, he doesn't move a whole lot and is pretty quiet. That's what makes me a little worried that he might need a friend. I interact with him by being near his cage while doing homework, and get him to step up, and "talk" back to him when he's being chatty. I'll try clicker training with him, it's just a little harder when he refuses to come out of his cage for any reason, but that's not that big of a deal.
Thanks for the refresher on quarantine and getting a new budgie, just in case

Katherine,

Niko would probably benefit from having a little male friend but be aware he will bond more closely to his "same-species" friend.

As long as you are fine with watching the two of them play and enjoy one another's company and aren't overly concerned about them bonding closely with you, then I'd say "Go for it!"

I love watching my budgies playing and interacting with one another.

Thanks Deb! I really appreciate the advice. Personally, my favorite part of owning Niko is just watching him be a bird, so I wouldn't mind if they weren't as closely bonded with me. Would love for them to hang out with me sometimes, but I wasn't expecting a cuddlebug when I got a budgie in the first place
I'll let you guys know if/when I get a new budgie!

Looking forward to seeing your new budgie, if you get one. Clicker training is a great way to hang out with a pair of budgies.
