Sorry about the title I can't seem to edit it! It should be - Getting a third budgie.
I have 2 budgies, one green male (Buddy) and one blue female (Elsa). They're both around 10-14 months old.
Buddy was brought up hand reared and is absoloutely crazy, hardly ever gets tired and is so manic. Elsa on the other hand was not brought up by humans and has only really gained her confidence via Buddy. Elsa is quite calm, and only really gets excited when she's out of the cage and/or infront of a mirror.
A lot of the time when they're in their cage, I see Elsa running away from Buddy. Buddy always follows her wherever she goes and if she does something he pecks her (doesn't actually touch her but just tries to be intimidating). Buddy tries to feed Elsa all the time and sometimes she does accept, but a lot of the time she just pecks at him and runs away. Buddy is clearly hormonal as he is always trying to mate with his favourite toy. They share their food bowl (has 2 bowls inside one big bowl).
They're out of their cage now and when they're out they're much friendlier with each other and Elsa is less 'scared' of Buddy and doesn't run away from him. Elsa is also letting him feed her.
Sadly a few weeks ago my budgies (Joey - female) of 6.5 years fell very sick and we had to take her to the vets to be put to sleep. Joey was very calm and only had a strong bond with me as I only introduced a budgie to Joey when she was 5 years old (Buddy). Obviously Joey didn't like Buddy as he was far too manic so I kept them seperate and got Buddy a new friend from my local garden centre (Elsa).
Buddy and Elsa loved Joey a lot, but Joey only really just about accepted Elsa (I think because she is so calm) and they used to just sit next to each other.
Do you think that they it would be a bad idea to get another budgie friend for Buddy or Elsa? I really wanted to get another as I have ample space in their new cage and would like to rescue some more from the place where I got Joey and Elsa (they are stuck in tiny cages and I love seeing them become happier in a bigger cage!) I was thinking of getting a calmer male budgie for Elsa and/or a playful male budgie for Buddy. Is getting just 1 a bad idea? I heard that it was bad as one could be left out or fight due to their genders, but unsure if 4 would be too cramped!
I recently added Joeys cage to the top of Buddy and Elsas cage to create a very large cage of around 1.3m in width and 2.3m in height. I know width is preferred as budgies prefer being at the top all the time, but I see them playing at all levels and they can fly from perch to perch easily.
Any advice is appreciated! Thank you!
