Budgie trying to jump on male Quaker parrots back?
Hi there!

I'm minding my cousins baby Quaker (Monk) parrot for a week, and my budgie Ace is acting...strange?

Even though we have two budgies, I only bring one out at a time when playing with Ringo. Houdini is pretty aloof, and they don't really interact.

Ace on the other hand is very excited. He runs straight up to him and tries to tap his beak, bobs his head and chatters at him. Now he's starting to hop onto his back. He just kind of steps onto his tail and tries to walk up. Ringo is being very patient and will just turn around to knock him off. But Ace is really persistent...

Ringo is still young and has never been sexed, so I guess it's possible that he's actually a female. Would Ace being able to tell?

I'm not worried really, but curious as to why Ace is acting this way!

It would probably be better if these two were not in the same space. Quaker's are quite a bit bigger, and even though Ringo's young.....your budgie, in being a pushy budgie could receive a serious bite from Ringo. They're all parrots, but personalities of budgies vary as much as variations of different species. I doubt that Ringo can not be harmed by Ace. but Ace could be harmed by Ringo. Since he's younger and in a new environment, he may be, for now, more reserved but I wouldn't take the chance of aggression on Ringo's part.

The more I think about it I actually recall that Ace does a similar thing to Houdini, except Houdini will just yelp and try to knock him off the perch.

So far Ringo hasn't shown any aggression at all towards Ace. They share fruit and will act quiet calm around each other (except when Ace is being a pest). I never leave them alone together, and I'm always within arms reach.

I agree with Phil. You need to be very careful having the budgies around the Quaker.
It would only take one bite and Ace could be badly injured.
