Chico, my budgie, has gotten along really well with me. I'm still unsure of its gender, but that isn't the matter at hand right now.
I haven't posted in a while, but throughout having Chico I've noticed they (hard to tell gender currently) do not like hands at all. I've hand-fed, fed treats, tried to lie them on the cage floor. Chico is still very uncomfortable with my hands!
Chico is completely fine with everything else, even my head or shoulders. It's just that i've seen them be very... afraid with hands. This probably stems from them being cage-grabbed by the store clerk (disgusting behaviour!), but I'm unsure. Chico is very comfortable with me, but not my hands. Anybody know any way I could maybe get Chico used to my hands and not very afraid of them? Thank you very much!
Since Chico is ok with you about everything but seems to have a fear of your hands. Just one problem. For now be careful with your hands around Chico. It is the only area that he is not perfect with you. That is almost perfect.
I completely agree with the advice provided above. I just wanted to add that when you are working with Chico and trying to get him used to your hands, keep talking to him in a calm, soothing, but encouraging voice. This will help to reassure him, especially as he already trusts you in general. Also, when moving your hands around in his cage, do so slowly. Sudden, fast movements will frighten him.
Thank you so much, everyone! Right now, Chico has gotten much more used to my hands and because now he regularly flies around my room (bird-proofed and watched by me) I usually have to help him up with my finger when he accidentally flies onto the floor. Thank you so much for your advice, everyone! I will keep trying to use my hands to feed him! Thank you!!
