Default Budgies always fight each other

For the past few weeks, my two male budgies have really been going at it with each other, fighting over food. And when they fight, they try to claw each other really badly. Also, whenever one of them is at the food dish, they immediately get hostile. How do I prevent this from happening?(I don't have a spare cage to use).

Making sure you have 2 food and water dishes should help, as well as plenty of perches and swings so they do t need to fight over who gets the best position. Ensuring your cage is plenty big enough for two birds will also help. If you have a small cage, birds will often fight over space. How old are your birds? Budgies will usually go through like a birdie puberty as they start to mature. During this time they’ll become grumpier and less tolerant of cage mates. This phase usually passes after awhile.

How large is the cage you have these birds in?
If you don't know for sure, please measure it and provide the Length, Width, and Height.
The very minimum size cage for two budgies is 30" Long by 18" Wide by 18" High.
Bigger is always better. Just be sure the spacing between the bars is no more than 1/2".

Do you have two food dishes and two water dishes in the cage? If not, you need to add extras.

You really need to have another cage on hand.
Every owner should have a cage that can be used if necessary for quarantine, separating budgies if fighting, hospital and travel.

If your budgies are fighting to the point where they are trying to pin one another down, then you must get another cage and separate the two budgies. Keeping them in the same cage together when they are aggressively fighting one another will end up with one (or both) being seriously injured or killed.

Alright, thanks for the help. I just ordered another cage, and added more dishes into the cages. The weird thing is that sometimes they fight, and sometimes they're really happy together and also preen each other. Once I get the second cage, I'll put one of them into the other one.

It's great that you ordered a second cage.

How big are each of the cages, the one you have now and the one you ordered?

Great you ordered an additional cage . As far as them getting along and preening each other and not “always” fighting, shows they are most likely compatible. The extra dishes you added as well as a larger cage might just be what you needed. What are the dimensions of the new cage?

The new dimensions are 20 inches by 29 inches by 16 inches. It seemed a little short but the width is large as well.

Is the new cage 20" long by 16" wide by 24" high?

How large is the original cage?

Please specify Length, Width and Height.

Thanks!

Sure. So the new cage is 20 inches high by 29 inches wide by 16 inches long.
The old cage is 26 inches high by 36 inches wide by 14 inches long.

The new cage is only large enough to house one budgie as it totals 9,280 cubic inches.

A cage to house two budgies needs to be a minimum of 9,720 cubic inches.

The older cage is 13,104 cubic inches which would be large enough for two budgies if they begin getting along together.

Best wishes!
