My two are very young and are in a big flight cage. Its been almost 3 weeks and they still huddle in the corner when I come in the room. Its very disheartening. They get all panicky when I change the food and water still if I move even the slightest bit fast. I wonder if I put them in a smaller cage that I can move from room to room with me they will tame faster. I have to consider the cat though, he is going to be wanting them in a little cage so will have to be super careful.
The only time they get chirpy is if I play budgie sounds on the computer and leave the room.
No, I don't recommend putting them in a smaller cage.
Keep them in a room where the cat never has access!
Make a point to spend a good portion of your day in the room with the budgies.
You will need to sit next to their cage and sing, read or talk to them for 10 - 15 minutes at least three to four times a day if you want to help them learn to trust you.
Exactly how large is the cage the budgies are in currently?
Length x Width x Height
Are you playing music or the TV for them when you aren't in the room with them?
I would stop playing the budgie sounds at this time - playing those sounds at this time is simply confusing them as they don't know where those birds are and want to be with them.
Thanks for the answers. I think the cage is 32x 21x 36, something like that. Its the HQ flight cage.. Yesterday I took the cover off completely and they seemed much happier. Ive kept the back and one side of the cage covered thinking it would make them feel more protected but I think it may have made them more freaked out.. I will stop the budgie sounds and start playing the music or something. They are in my office/craft room so I go in there several times a day and always stop to chat, though not for 15 minutes. I dont need them to be hand tame, just tame enough to be happy and not scared all the time. Also I do have another bird, I have a greencheek that is almost always on my shoulder. Ive had her for 10 years now. I was hoping if they saw her being happy on me they would get the idea I wasnt bad...A plus is they are eating the finely grated carrot and thin shredded kale I put on top of their seed..
