Default Grieving budgies

Hello everyone! I have 6 budgies in a large cage. They have been living together for about 2 years now. Unfortunately, one of them passed away today. Not sure how but he was laying at the bottom of the cage with a bent neck and blood on his face. I do believe he could have possibly fallen and hurt himself badly. The other five are now much more quiet and are chirping less. They are also huddling closer together. They usually spread out around the cage but now they all stay by each other. I have a feeling they notice the loss of their friend and I don’t know what to do.

Hi! to Talk Budgies

I'm very sorry to hear about the loss of your budgie.

Your other birds definitely know their friend is gone and it is going to take them some time to adjust.
You will probably see a shift in the flock dynamics over time as well which is quite normal.

Spend time with them talking to them in a calm and reassuring manner.
They will need to grieve for a bit but will be back to singing and playing after a few days.

Please take the time to read through the Site Guidelines, all of the How To Guides, the FAQs, the Budgie Articles and the stickies located at the top of each section of the forum.

Truly, the very BEST advice anyone can offer you is to take the time to read ALL of the stickies throughout the various Talk Budgie forums as well as the Budgie Articles we have posted.

These are great resources for Talk Budgie members and have a wealth of reliable information which will assist you to learn the best practices in caring for your budgies for their optimal health and well-being.

Best wishes!
