Baby Budgie Sleeping & Swing ?’s
You guys my baby budgie almost 10 weeks old now and she sleeps at the bottom of her cage nestled under the food dish. I have paper towels covering the bottom grate so it’s soft there. She used to sleep in the little coconut hut but I removed it after learning from here that it can cause aggression and hormonal surges. Is sleeping on the bottom of the cage typical? She’s never slept on a perch. It looks like she’s laying down almost because she squeezed herself under the food dish.

Also, I put a swing in her cage and had her step up on it. After a few minutes She swayed and then rolled forward and flopped off into the cage. She’s never been on a swing so I’m guessing she lost her balance? She climbs all over the cage and perches during the daytime. Seems Not interested in the swing after that first try.

Are these just baby budgie behaviors? Does she need more time to adjust? Advice welcomed. thank you in advance for helping this new nervous budgie mom lol

At 10 weeks, I’d say yes this is because she’s still very young. You’ll soon see her grow out of this stage. Swings are definitely something to include in a budgie cage. She’ll get the hang of it. In general, budgies love swings.

Thank you for your reply. Do you think she is missing the nest box? I'll keep the swing and hopefully she learns to love it. Thanks again I love this forum!

Coconut should not have a nest box at 10 weeks old. Sleeping under the food dish on the floor of her cage is just fine for now.
She'll stop sleeping on the floor of her cage as she gets older and will learn to perch on the swing without falling off it as well.

Some budgies sleep in their food dishes when they are babies and/or try to squeeze themselves into tight places because it makes them feel more secure. These behaviors are quite normal for young birds.

Thank you so much. This made me feel much better. She does lay in her food dish too! I don’t have a nest-box I was just thinking maybe she’s missing her budgie family and the little box she was in when I adopted her. I’m learning patience goes a long way with baby budgies. Thanks again.
