Moody budgie

Hi everyone,
So little coconut is not as sweet as I thought she was/would be. She was really great at stepping up and hanging out on our shoulder and had such a sweet disposition. Lately the morning time she’s a grump that doesn’t want to come out of her cage at all. And again 7pm she’s just over any and all human interaction. We remain patient and slow. Sadly both my son and I are somewhat disappointed in her attitude. She will try to bite our hand if we try to socialize with her or she will immediately fly back to her cage if she comes out. I don’t notice any signs of malting. Is this just how her personality is forming?

If she is biting that is her signal to back off whatever it is you are doing at the time, don't push her to do something she is not interested in. You have only had her about a month and it takes months to tame a budgie and they do go through phases with their personality as they mature so don't be disappointed. Do I remember correctly that you have a dog and if so is the dog kept away from the bird? The presence of a dog could contribute to the change you have noticed, she may be afraid or startled by the barking of a dog or the sight of one if that is happening. It is recommended that if there are dogs or cats are in the same household as birds that they are kept separate from one another at all times.

Thank you!!

Oh you are right! Maybe the dog! Yes we have a yellow lab but she’s literally a couch potato and lays around doing nothing. She’s the sweetest. Because of recommendations from this site the bird is in a separate room and we keep them separate. She barks at the mailman lol but that’s 2 rooms away.

So interesting so I posted this and coconut came out to mingle with me and was nibbling my finger and cheek. It was new and sweet. Do you know what that is about??

Thanks for your reply I love the advice and thoughts. She is almost 3 months old

I would say she is exploring new things, they tend to explore with their beaks.

You also need to remember that Coconut is a bird and just because you and your son want to interact with her at particular times, that doesn't mean she wants to interact with you right then. ;)

When you are dealing with a budgie, you must respect its boundaries and move only at its pace. Some days Coconut may be more willing to interact than others and it is important to adjust accordingly.

Additionally, at three months old, Coconut is probably now going through puberty.
The hormonal changes in her body are going to affect her behavior.

Oh so this could be adolescence?! Already?! Oh wow I had no idea. What do you recommend for this?? It seems so soon....

Budgies mature rapidly and 12 weeks is about the right time for adolescence to set in.

You simply need to be patient and go at Coconut's pace with regard to taming and bonding.
