I am just asking for your opinion. I have had solitary hens that were sweet and tamed. I have also had males who were aggressive and only semi-tamed. I was wondering what your experience has been. My latest budgie is Sam. She appears to be female. She also behaves like a male. She chatters incessantly, she tamed in 2 weeks (she was 8 weeks) and she head bobs. I know behavior is not a sign of gender. I almost hope that she is a female so I can put to rest the rumours that female budgies are bossy, agressive and ...well..bitches. It hurts me to hear so many stories where females are returned once their owners see that they are girls. Tell me your stories of your little hens...
I too have been bothered by the stories of people only wanting male budgies because they are considered better. I love my sweet little Lemon Drop. She can be a bit bitey toward me sometimes, seemingly related to her hormones. Occasionally I think this is related to her liking the way my fingers and skin feel on her beak and not about trying to hurt me at all. Otherwise, she is sweet and obedient (ok, only so much as most budgies are) and affectionate. I feel lucky that she likes to have me scratch her head and face, especially when she is molting. She likes to be near me, greets me when I come home, and often sits by me while I am working on my computer or at my desk. Lemon Drop is my first budgie. I picked her out from a pet store (I know, I will find a reputable breeder next time) based on her temperament. She seemed calm and aware. Some of the other birds were clearly aggressive. So even though other birds had coloring I liked more, I took home Lemon Drop that same day and have been very happy with my feathered friend. She seems happy with me as her flock.
Two of mine are hens, one is sweet as can be, the other is bossy and much more vocal than the other, I think it is unfair to stereotype hens, you just have to go with whatever their personality is.
Unique personality indeed. Mine has a mind of her own and a temperment to match. Loves flipping on her back to play as well as chatter away. Loves her bath in the sink with the water running over her. Never had a budgie male or female that acted like this..lol
