Default Extreamly hormonal budgie!

Hello Everyone;

I have two budgies and one of them is extreamly hormonal for a looong time. Both of them are male. At the beginning I was not think about it that much but lately I'm little bit worried about him. Every time he is out of his cage he is trying to mate with my hand thumb I'm not letting him but he flying to chandelier and tring to mating over there I'm not letting him again. in the mean time he is chasing other budgie around the room. he is flying everywhere in room or house, although he is tired enough to spread his wings he never stops.
Sometimes I lock him up in his cage and close the light (if it's night) and waiting for him to calm down. But it's not the solution I know.

I told that to our avian vet she advices us hormonal treatment. But I'm not sure about that.

he is about 34-35 gr and about 2.5 years old
the other is 46-47 gr and about 2 years old
both of them eating versela laga prestige seeds and zupreem fruit blend
( I mixed them but most of time they prefer seeds but both eat pelets too ) and 3 or 4 days a week I provide them various vegetables and fruits ( spinach, walnuts, appeles, mandarins, brocolie, carrot (which is their favorite) )

hormonal one is so love other one but so jealous at the same time. most of time he not let me to kiss or talk with other one.

They sleep with night lamp because they are freaked out full darknes I tried so many times but they start to flying in the cage like a freak and hitting the toys etc. ( I dont know maybe not sleeping in the dark is effect their hormons)

last month I started to give them guardian angles supplement in their water ( 5 days in a week with Guardian andgel and 2 days just water ). Because other one has diarrhea and treated for some kind of parazite.

I try to write every thing because I dont know what is triggering him.

Actually I read an artical about, if a budgie is too hormonal, the testicle tumor risk is too high. And it's my main concern.

it would be really great to get some opinion about that what should I do ?

I have a really pervert budgie and I dont know what to do

Thanks in advance

To help with the continual urge to "mate", ensure your budgie has access to lots of flight/climbing exercise.
Provide two or three swings to encourage him to keep moving and tire himself out.
Chew toys like Kabobs and other shredding toys are helpful and you should provide plenty of wood to chew--especially when he is in condition.

Reduce the number of hours of light Reduce the daylight hours to no more than 8 hours of light per day for a few weeks. This should help.
Additionally, a reduction in the amount of protein in the bird's diet is advisable.

If the urges donít dissipate, then I agree with your Avian Vet - the budgie will need to have a special diet and/or hormone injection. Only a professional can make the accurate diagnosis and provide a viable treatment plan.

Good luck!

Hello;

Thank you for your quick respond. There are 3 swings in their cage but I 'll provide them chewing toys. There is none of them. Thanks all the advices I 'll try them out.

I give my oldest girl the hormone shot because she tried to lay her first egg ever in 6 years and got egg bound.

$2000 and two eggs that had to be removed by ovocentesis later, she's getting the shot!!

It's worth it!

I've been told that my girl will need three altogether, 2 weeks apart?

Is that not standard?

To my knowledge that is the standard protocol.

Hello there ;

at our last visit to avian vet, the vet said that my hormonal budgie's testicals growth little bit. So he needs actually both need hormone injection 3 times 3 weeks apart. So she shot first one 2 weeks ago. in past 2 weeks I covered them at least 12 hours dark at nights and not let him rubing himself on things.. so far he's little bit better to me. still chasing other budgie or sometimes getting crazy but not like old times. there is no color changes on cere or else problem.

this saturday I will take them for second shot..my question is In my country the weather is really cold these days so I dont want them to getting cold so if I stop injections till the weather is ok is that good idea? he is better I think, but should I continue injections?

Thanks in advance..

No, please do not wait to have the injections until warmer weather.

You need to follow the instructions the vet gave you and stay on schedule with the injections for them to work properly.

Be sure you warm up the car before taking the budgie's cage out to it.
Wrap the cage in a blanket to ensure cold air doesn't get into the cage and move it from your home into the car as quickly as possible.
You can also fill a plastic bottle with warm water and place it in the bottom of the cage to help ensure the cage stays warm during the trip to the vet.

Let us know how things progress.
