Budgie Breeding Before breeding any species, it is important to learn as much about the animals, their personalities and the best practices to follow for responsible and ethical breeding prior to making the commitment to take on the responsibility.

Exclamation Budgie Nest Box

This is my first time breeding budgies so I did lots of research on what to do. On one of the websites I read that I have to get a beatbox which I got. I know that it has to be as high as possible but I really don't want to cut the wires since its a new cage. So I attached it to one of the entrances next to their food. I have been watching them for a couple of days now and they are not going into or on the perch of the nesting box. In fact they are doing everything they can to avoid it! The reason I am worried is that they mated the second day I got the box and they probably don't know it's supposed to be their nest! Any advise would be really appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Do you have the pair separated from your other birds in a specific cage for breeding purposes?

Breeding cages are generally very low as shown in this link:

Do you have a proper nest box with a concave bottom?

This one is a good choice:

Are you certain both budgies are a minimum of 12 months old and in condition?
Have you had the budgies on a proper conditioning diet?

Generally, the female will start exploring the nesting box when she is ready.

I would recommend you review the information in the following links:
