Budgie Breeding Before breeding any species, it is important to learn as much about the animals, their personalities and the best practices to follow for responsible and ethical breeding prior to making the commitment to take on the responsibility.

Default How Old Do Chicks Need To Be...

How old do my little chicks have to be before you can at least start guessing at their gender? They are a little over 4 1/2 weeks now. I did try to take decent pictures of their cere's, but they were not happy about it. How dare I make them sit still for 5 seconds! I don't know if it's too early yet, but here are the pictures I got.

Frost:

Thunder:

Lightning:

It depends on the chicks and on the amount of colour on the cere that will allow us to take more of an educated guess.
I have had chicks below 4 weeks that I was able to accurately tell gender. And then there are the mutations which are sex-linked and those we are able to tell very early on. In the case of Ino budgies, depending on the parents, gender can be determined on the first day of the chick's life.

From those pics, I'd say Frost is a boy, Thunder is a girl and Lightning is a boy.
When the ceres' colours set in more, it will be easier to tell the genders from pictures.
