Budgie Breeding Before breeding any species, it is important to learn as much about the animals, their personalities and the best practices to follow for responsible and ethical breeding prior to making the commitment to take on the responsibility.

Default Introducing babies to the flock

At what age is it okay to start introducing the babies to my larger flock? They are 6 weeks old now, and are eating on their own. They are not begging for dad to feed them anymore, from what I have seen. I know they should stay together until at least 8 weeks, but when can I start introducing them to the rest of my flock? Out of the cage, of course.

Hi there!

You can give your chicks one more week to allow them to build more confidence.
Then you can choose one or two of your sweetest budgies for the chicks to meet for the first time when having out of cage time. The time set for these meetings will depend on how the chicks will behave and interact with your existing flock (at first it's best to not prolong for more than 45 minutes, 20 - 30 minutes during the first few meetings should suffice).
It's important to closely watch how the meetings go and to know when to end them in case the chicks get nervous or overwhelmed or when bullied by the older budgies. By controlling these little meetings, watching behaviours, etc, you can then gradually introduce the rest of your budgie flock provided these older budgies have a good personality and temperament.

As to the female you had issues in the past due to aggression, it's best to keep the chicks away from her.

Good luck!

Yea, I had no intentions of introducing them to her. She is separated from the rest of the flock as it is, and has her own out of cage time.
