Yazzi & Piccolo Might Be Parents
Long story short, I intended to breed Lasso and Yazzi a couple years ago. I did extensive research, took many notes, and began buying supplies. Then my husband and I decided to add to our human family instead, so I put it off and after the new baby it just wasn't the right time.
After Lasso died I weighed the pros and cons and brought Piccolo into the family, not to breed, but to keep Yazzi company since she had never been a single budgie. They became the best of pals and it was ultimately a really good decision.
Fast forward to now and I have the time and means to attempt to breed. More importantly, Yazzi and Piccolo are very healthy, very active, and have super traits that I would love to pass on if and only if they are willing. Piccolo is extremely active and very playful and Yazzi has always been a spunky budgie and is always the first to try out the new toy/food/whatever.
For her safety, this will be the first and only chance for Yazzi this summer as she will be four at the end of this year. I'd rather have Yazzi safe and healthy and will not push the breeding if nature doesn't allow.
I have begun conditioning and all that that entails. It's a little weird because up to this point all I have done is discourage breeding. They have been out of condition for a while now and are just finishing up a small molt. They have a couple pinnies left. Based on the research I have done this is the optimal time to begin conditioning and preparing them for breeding condition.
I introduced brown rice for the first time a few days ago and today Yazzi gobbled it up. Piccolo soon followed suit. Neither one usually eats anything but greens and seed so this was quite the surprise! They are on probiotics and calcium in addition to fresh green veggies and their exisiting vitamins. They still won't touch carrots because they're orange. They're still suspicious of the egg food because it's yellow, but if I mix enough greens they'll peck at it. I'm hoping they take to it like they did the rice, though. It is essential to strong eggs and Yazzi's health during breeding and if they don't eat it willingly I won't have them breed.
I have a notebook filled with notes about budgie breeding that I have gathered over the years and I have another notebook I am using as a pre-breeding journal to document everything I do. If things go well it will then be used as a breeding journal.
I will be monitoring them closely. If at any time I feel doubtful of their ability I plan to stop immediately, but I feel extremely well-prepared and I know my budgies are very healthy.
I'm so excited!
And here are the promised pics.

The picture came out blurry so I used Photoshop to make it more artsy. haha
The Lovely Budgies
I plan on keeping every last baby budgie. I have a brand new large flight cage on order to make sure everybudgie has room. And if the babies don't happen then Piccolo and Yazzi are getting a first-class upgrade anyway!
