Default How can I tell if my budgie is going to have a baby?

Hi, I've noticed my birds mating multiple times, but nothing has ever come of it. Poet, my female, has been in breeding condition for some time. However, I haven't noticed them mating recently, and seemingly overnight Poet expanded like a balloon! This was about four days ago. She has always been a very skinny bird, and this is very out of character for her. She even has visible fat rolls by her feet. Is it normal for budgies to gain weight when they're going to lay eggs? I have bought a nesting box for her, and both my budgies are from different pet stores. I've researched a lot about the topic over the past couple of days, but I can't tell if this is normal. She is also much more aggressive than usual, and has become much more active. She chews a lot on her cuttle bone, which she never touched before, and my male budgie feeds her a lot, but this he has always done. I just want to make sure this doesn't mean she has some sort of health issue or something alike.
Thanks,
Sarah

Hi Sarah!

Do you have any pictures of your Poet in her current condition? This will help us to better understand if the bloating is caused by an egg or by another factor

Meanwhile, I would remove the nest box right away. Simply because budgies mate does not mean they are ready to raise a family, especially when you haven't had the time to research more fully. Breeding budgies takes a lot of research, and definitely more than you can acquire in a few days!

Even if she does lay an egg, the egg is not fertile (i.e no life in it at all) until she has incubated for 2-3 days, so if she does, you should toss it and follow the instructions in this link:
https://talkbudgies.com/budgie-breedi...want-eggs.html

If Poet and Pepper are still at the proper age for breeding (over one and under four years of age) after you have been able to ensure all conditions are optimal for them to raise a family, I believe it would be a much better situation

Good luck!

Before breeding any species, it is important to learn as much about the animals, their personalities and the best practices to follow for responsible and ethical breeding prior to making the commitment to take on the responsibility. This requires extensive research and an openness to continual learning. Just researching for a couple of days isn't going to be enough.

You indicated in your other thread that you don't have much experience with birds so trying to allow them to breed at this point in time is not recommended. Removing the next box and breaking her breeding cycle would be best for your budgies.

Okay, I'll remove the nesting box. Also, yes, sorry, I forgot to post pictures. Poet is a bit over two years old and I have had her since she was a baby. She's a very sweet lutino and, though she can be very sassy, likes to be around me as much as she can. She usually sits on my shoulder and accompanies me around the house. The first attachment is of her most recently and the others are of her from the past few months.
Thanks,
Sarah

Your Poet is currently in breeding condition but that doesn't mean she will lay an egg(s).
This only means that her body is ready to carry eggs if all the requirements are met for her to do so.
The signs that a budgie is carrying eggs can be seen by checking only the vent area for swelling. The poops will also be massive in size and have a more flattened out appearance when a hen is about to lay or has already begun laying.

By following the recommendations on the link previously given to you, you will be preventing potential breeding behaviour from progressing further.

Good luck!
