Budgie Breeding Before breeding any species, it is important to learn as much about the animals, their personalities and the best practices to follow for responsible and ethical breeding prior to making the commitment to take on the responsibility.

Default Do I need to keep putting them back in the nestbox?

I have a clutch of 5 babies; the oldest is 5 weeks old. They are all out of the nestbox at first opportunity and don't show any desire to go back in. Dad is feeding them fine out of the nestbox, and they are all experimenting with veggies and seed.

Having said that, is it necessary to keep putting them back in the nestbox at night? Or should I let them do their thing and they will go in if they want?

I have created this little hideyhole in case they wanted somewhere ground level.

No, you don't need to place them back on the nest box at night.
They are perfectly able to go back in the nest box if they want to.
This is all part of the weaning process and gaining of independence.
Once all of the chicks no longer use the nest for comfort or to sleep/take naps, you can proceed to remove it from the cage. The same goes for the hiding area you have at the cage's bottom.
