Budgie Breeding Before breeding any species, it is important to learn as much about the animals, their personalities and the best practices to follow for responsible and ethical breeding prior to making the commitment to take on the responsibility.

Default DIS reason?

We lost egg #4. i waited a couple days to make sure. Tried to research but couldnt find much. It seems as if the entire embryo, viens, yolk and all seperated from the shell. Upon candling today, as im sure it was already gone, everything in the egg just spun around as i moved it. Only a small blood ring had started to show but the egg was discolored, almost wet looking in places. Does anybody know why this happened?

There are many reasons for what may have caused that outcome.
The chances for DIS to happen are higher within the first few days of incubation and also the last 2 or 3 days before hatching.
Any shaking/vibration at the very early stages can cause a developing embryo to die, then there are other contributing factors during incubation, like humidity or the egg being chilled, for example.

The health condition of the parents is also extremely important because that will also determine how strong the developing embryo/chick will be.
If there is a nutritional deficiency, then the chances for a full term development and successful hatch are lower.
Then there are also the potential viral or bacterial infections, the potential contamination from handling the eggs without taking prior sanitizing measures, etc.

Thank you. I was wondering about the humidity and possibly dehydration in the egg bc it has been very dry in our home. I got a humidifier now so hopefully that will help. Mom and dad are on a diet of roudybush high energy breeder crumbles with some seed and i also feed them greens, fruits and veggies daily so i can only assume that their diet wasnt the issue. They are both healthy. Hopeful that if i could pinpoint the issue i could possibly prevent it from happening again in the future. You are always so helpful and knowledgable. Thank you again!

Hello, as Aluz said it is SO MANY reasons that clutch might have DIS, that you won't be able to control on your own.
Jumps of the temperature - not just inside the room but inside the egg, jumps of the humidity, hen is a not good seater, multiple cock interruptions, ect ect ect.
I've read somewhere that red circle inside of the egg during first week of incubation means that the egg was fertile but got infected by bacteria and becomes DIS before the embryo even started developing further.
Good luck!
