Budgie Breeding Before breeding any species, it is important to learn as much about the animals, their personalities and the best practices to follow for responsible and ethical breeding prior to making the commitment to take on the responsibility.

Default I have eggs

I was at the pet store a couple of weeks ago and saw cozy budgie tents so I bought a tent for each budgie cage. My female decided to turn that tent into a nest and as of yesterday there are 4 eggs. I never planned on breeding my budgies and i want to make sure I am doing everything in my power to keep everyone healthy. I am not even sure if this tent is safe enough for them. I just need some advice on this situation so I donít accodentally jepordize my birds.

Hi there and to the forums!

You should toss the eggs immediately if she only just finished laying the eggs yesterday. The eggs do not have life in them until they are incubated for at least two or three days, so throwing them away now is the same as throwing eggs from the store away.

After doing so, rearrange their cages and remove the cozy tents from all of them. Budgies don't need tents, nests, or any other enclosed space to hide in , they have feathers to keep cozy and closed in spaces only encourage breeding behaviour. Additionally, fabric in the cage is not good as they can chew on and ingest it, leading to crop impaction, and can get their toes stuck in it, which could also be very dangerous.

Here's a link with how to discourage breeding behavior in the future:

Also, be sure to read through all of the many articles and stickies that we have here! If you have any questions after reading through everything, be sure to ask as we'd love to help.

You've come to the best possible place to keep posted on the very best of budgie care practices!

Keep us posted on everything, and we look forward to meeting your budgies!

Cheers!

She has been incubating them for almost a week now. I have removed the tent from my boy Leviís cage(He did not like it much anyways) and now that I know it is unsafe. Phoenix(female) hasnít rarely left the eggs for since last Wednesday.

Has she been with a male budgie in the past few weeks or has she always been separate from Levi?

I Have 3 budgies. A member in the community could no longer take on boston(male) and Phoenix. They have always shared a cage since before I had them. Levi has always been separate as I had him first.

I see, that makes sense. The next step is to candle the eggs to see if they are fertile.

If they are, you're going to need to do a lot of research in a very short time.

This link contains all the stickies you need to read if the eggs are indeed fertile:

Not knowing what these "tents" are like (a photo would help) but budgies nest in cavities in trees and in captivity they should have an enclosed breeding box, the young need to be raised in relative darkness, and fed by both parents. Raising budgies is not something to take on lightly.
Use the link from Starlingwings to give you an idea of how this process works.

Did you candle the eggs? I agree that the eggs need to be moved to a nest box, but only if they are fertile. It's important to candle them first to see if there is any life in them.
