My babies are doing really well. The oldest is 6 days old, and the youngest (who won't be in the pictures) is one day old. So far, 4 out of 5 eggs have hatched. We'll know tomorrow if all 5 were fertile!
Here's Lucy. She was busy feeding her babies right before this photo:
Here's the babies! The oldest has its little eyes open, but the light was a little too bright still The oldest is also just now starting to get feathers. Each baby is super chubby and always have stuffed crops!
Something really crazy happened today. I just now (at around 3pm) took all 4 babies from the nest box too hold them and check on them for a moment. I assumed that the 5th egg, which looked like a dud when candled, wasn't going to hatch. All of the other eggs hatched at almost exactly 3am, so this one was 12 hours late. I checked for it, and having not seen it anywhere, assumed Lucy ate it.
When I was holding all of the babies, I noticed a faint chirping coming from the cage. I looked everywhere, and couldn't find the missing newborn. Finally, I checked in the tray on the bottom of the cage. The only thing there was, somehow, an unopened egg. Lucy must have pushed it from the nest box.
So, I took the egg, and immediately realized that the chirping was coming from inside of it. I used my fingernail to gently open it, and sure enough, there was a tiny, fully formed, living baby inside. That was a half an hour ago, and already, the baby's got a full crop. If the little trooper lives, its name is Lucky
