Sam is the two-week old newest addition to our aviary. He is plump, happy, chirpy and curious, parent-reared but handled extensively now each day.
Father is Alex, a run-of-the-mill green male of one year.
Mother is Sunny, an opaline greywing green of five.
They are an extremely devoted pair. Where one goes, the other follows. Alex has assisted in caring for little Sam since his hatching. I've since found out this is somewhat atypical for parakeets and normally females are less tolerant? My hen didn't get that memo. Both birds are often in the nest together with the baby.
Sam was a happy accident, a single secret egg hidden amongst a clutch of duds put under mom to keep her busy months ago. Imagine my shock when one of those duds hatched! Despite the surprise the parents knew right what to do. I've never seen a more spoiled little baby bird!
