I've really been slacking with photos this year, but today I decided to present the aviary with an epic picnic of parsley, thistle and dandelion and I couldn't possible miss capturing the moments.
To bring everyone up to speed with what's been happening, I've had 5 new additions so far this year - Sally, Lily, Jules, Toz, and a male that is yet to be named (I'll be taking suggestions! A part of me is thinking 'James'...). They are slowly growing to love their new companions and getting use to flock life after being confined to a small cage for quite some time. Sadly, Sally has been found to have had a broken right wing which has left her mostly unable to fly. I will be breeding her once at the end of this year, and then will be looking to rehome her to someone who can keep her in a smaller cage, where flying will not seem such a daunting task.
On top of that, I acquired a 'wild' budgie earlier this year who was drawn to the aviary. Due to me having just watched Pirates of the Caribbean and his eclectic personality, he was dubbed Captain Jack. After failing to find his owners, he finished quarantine before joining the others in the aviary.
Also, my last clutches have grown into stunning birds, each with their own attitude (some more noticable than others!). They've all been through their first moults now and I must say that I am so very proud of them; they make the losses I suffered a little less painful.
But now, on with the picnic!
watched closely as I entered with the goodies.
was one of the smarter ones, choosing to munch on the leaves in the food bowl rather than fight over those hanging around the cage.
This photo makes me laugh. Dante
was fiercely protecting a piece of dandelion from Unnamed Male
, who somehow managed to trip over Pockie
as he ran away.
This is another favourite of mine. With Mo
perching above, I can just imagine what is going through the heads of Sora
. "Please don't poop, please don't poop..."
This piece was a crowd favourite with Mo
and his eldest sons Gidget
enjoyed a meal together.
Gusty young Pockie
claimed this entire thistle for herself!
And sister Spangle
did the same! Cheeky little girls...
Quiet little Snowy
made sure she got her share.
went off to share some pre-eaten food with sister Jimmette
... who today he 'officially' took as his mate! Oops!
Special little Peanut
took some time out to come and say hello. Isn't he looking great? Apart from his feet, you'd never know this little boy was a touch 'different'.
kept a close eye on me, too.
Poor little Sally
opted to stay out of trouble, what with her injured right wing.
She did have a little munch on a flower though.
After gorging themselves on the lush greenery, most of them settled down to sleep.
went to check on sister Kin
Before settling down to sleep with Song
was tired just from watching the others.
With a full belly, cranky-looking Dante
went to find a quiet place to sleep.
My pride and joy, newcomer Lily
, was exhausted after fighting her way in to the greens.
*sigh* There's always one weird one, isn't there? Puddleduck
wasn't happy to sleep normally like the others.
The handsome new stud, Toz
settled down to snooze.
Stormy was exhausted, even though she hadn't eaten.
decided to make himself look good before he slept.
And now for the fella who needs a name. He's a beautiful lutino/cremino who came with Toz, Jules, and Sally.
Hope you all enjoyed this rather lengthy post!
