Default 1st molt?

Not sure if Billie is coming up to his 1st molt but he sure is acting weird.
Hes not losing feathers but preening alot and has a couple of pinnies on his face and head.
He's being a bit nippy aswel which is unusual.
He's got a rope toy in the corner of his cage and he keeps brushing himself against, nudging, nibbling it..and it looks like he's trying to talk to it alot.
He didnt want to come out of his cage before which isn't like him at all...he's normally dying to come out in the morning.
Don't like my baby nipping me
Does this sound like he may be coming up to his 1st molt? Hes 12 weeks old this weekend?

Awww, what a sweet, cute budgie you have! He's just simply adorable!

How long have you had Billie? The signs you see could be indicative of his first moult, though it typically occurs at roughly four months of age. He could be acting this way because he is now more comfortable in his surroundings too, so he's doing more budgie-like things... (Which is why I was asking how long you have had him...) It's hard to say, but he's so cute!

Hi. That is so cute. I don't use sand Paper perches a breeder told me to use Native Branches as the sand paper hurts there feet. I love your budgie.

Very good point Lyn. Sandpaper perches are not good for birds as they can cause irritation and soreness... and possibly even lead to infection or other more serious problems. I wish pet stores wouldn't sell them.

Ohh..I shall take them out then.

I've had him 4 weeks..he's been coming out of his cage everyday for 2weeks...and never bit me until now..he just seems agitated and less socialable the last couple of days.
Maybe he's too young for his 1st molt yet then...maybe some treats might help

Sounds like a good plan.

Keep working with Billie daily and make sure you are reading his body language while training him so that you don't push him too far beyond what he is comfortable with. I know that for me, if I start seeing the beak opening and hearing the little mini-squeaks that I'm not too far away from getting the beak jab... If I push past that, then I'm definitely in for a nip, so I back off whenever I start seeing those first signs that I'm invading my budgie's space.

Aww, he is so cute! I also think it's a bit soon for a first moult. Good luck with your little one!
