Default The Fresh Food Fight

So ya, Fred and I are having a sort of handbags at dawn thing over his absolute refusal to eat anything other than seeds and millet sprays.

This is how is typically goes.

Oh, you've left it whole this time instead of chopping it up. You can't fool me, human.

Watch me all you like, it ain't gonna happen

I'd rather hang out with my plastic pal than eat your 'fresh' veg and fruit

Carrots and swede, you say? With cress? And seeds on top? I am a master at picking the seeds off the top. Muahahaha

But I'm handsome tho, right? So give me seed!

This is what I think of your 'strawberry'

Looks interesting but I'm not convinced.

That's it, I'm outta here

I sat right in front of his cage tonight, eating my apple strudel and ice cream. He was so interested in what I was eating I thought surely he would want to try some of mine or at least eat his. He hopped right up to my bowl. He chirped - which is a miracle, so all is not lost - but he wasn't having any of it.

So he's gone to bed with a fresh bowl of seeds.

Fred 1 - Me 0

What a nice little story, quite entertaining too! Keep on offering him the veggies/fruit and he will eventually try them out.
I love that photo of him sitting on top of the strawberry!

I will not be beaten Aluz! Both my other birds went straight for their spinach/broccoli/kale. They were pet store birds.

Frederick Von Novegandfruit has different ideas.

But, whilst I was eating my pudding, I made all kinds of noises about how great it was and that I'd have shared it with him if he ate his own, etc etc. He watched me intently, flipping his head this way and that. Then he hopped out, and was interested in what I was eating and what I was saying. And actually, when he sat on that strawberry I took it as a small victory as up until now, he wouldn't even touch anything. So he's curious I guess.

Isn't it amazing how they can pick one small seed out of a pile of mashed up veg? And further amazing how they can eyeball you with mocking glee whilst they do it

Wait, wait, wait, Ma!! What do you mean, you ate your apple strudel and ice cream?? How do you expect Fred to eat his veggies when you are feasting on sweets??
Have a bowl of salad in front of him and see if he gets interested. My cockatiels will try anything if they see me eating it.

Sky starting eating strawberries by picking off the seeds and then realizing that the berry is yummy, too. He is munching on some green pepper right now.

What a cute and funny little story! Keep trying. I have offered my budgie lots of different fruits and veg and so far she only likes the veg and won't touch apples. I have been giving her 2 tsp of seed each morning and then the other veg and fruits. I wait until it is evening to give her more seeds if she's eaten them all and usually during the day she will chow down on some carrot or kale if there aren't a bunch of seeds to fall back on. I only give her millet from my hand as I'm trying to earn her trust. I don't know what others do in terms of amount of seed by I read somewhere on here that 2tsp/day is enough for one budgie. I also have a small bowl of pellets that she has yet to touch . I'd love for her to give up the seeds and go for the pellets but she loves her seeds so much!
