Despite going on a 14km hike this morning I still had time and energy to get the boys together for their very first meet and greet. It went fantastic! Kalani is totally in love already, it seems, with his new "toy". Keoki doesn't seem to care one way or another, but I think this is just the overwhelming experience being moved to a new room in the house.
It took awhile for them to look at each other from close up in their respective cages, but in no time at all they were both clinging to the bars, staring at one another. Kalani was climbing in his food dish trying to get a better look at Keoki... stupid me for putting the feeders in both their cages on the sides they would be able to see each other through.
They seemed really keen to see each other so I brought Keoki out, he is the easiest to get out of his cage. He immediately b-lined to Kalani's cage and clung to the bars. I watched them to make sure Kalani wasn't biting his feet as I know they can sometimes do. Instead the tapped beaks and low-and-behold Keoki started feeding Kalani. Funny because he is the younger of the two.
I know it might seem soon, but I was just doing what my birds obviously wanted - to get to know each other and get closer. Kalani came out and they hung out on top of his cage. There was a lot of beak tapping, feeding and follow the leader. Kalani took Keoki on a few tours around the room. Keoki is so much better at flying. He tried to land on top of my closet door (which is recessed) and aside from that never hit the wall once. Kalani even showed Keoki the bird tree. One thing I noticed right away (and I had this feeling since I got Keoki) is that Kalani is noticeably larger than Keoki. I'm not sure if this automatically gives him the upper hand but he did seem awfully keen and may have overwhelmed Keoki a little. I'm sure Keoki will learn to hold is ground, he was already trying a little.
I do have a question about behavior between two budgies (both males) and what is normal dominance stuff and what is stuff to be worried about. I'm not well versed in budgie-budgie interactions, yet. Aside from the feeding and beak tapping, which I know are good signs, Kalani was also putting his foot up on Keoki's breast. I'm assuming this is just dominance stuff, but I want to be sure so I'm prepared if it turns into something serious. Keoki did seem to hold his ground and beaked at him to back off or whatever, so hopefully they will sort it out and become best buds.
I really am looking forward to hanging out with both of them together, getting to watch them interact and after about a week working with some more training with them. Hopefully by then the newness of having another budgie around won't be the main focus anymore.
