Today was the day! Pluck and Penry got to meet outside of their cages for the first time!
The introduction went well, though Penry still doesn't seem to grasp what this little blue alien is. We let the boys share some millet for a bit, and they were more focused on the millet than on each other. When we took the millet away, they started interacting more. Pluck was excited to see another budgie (I think he misses his pet shop friends), but Penry has never been around other birds so he was pretty clueless. Pluck would follow Penry everywhere as he pecked around at the millet crumbs. Penry seemed a tad annoyed with this and more or less ignored Pluck.
Later, they had a nice chat on my husband's shoulder. (Penry's first words to Pluck: "Call me turdy"
). They individually preened themselves for a bit, then Penry decided he'd try to preen Pluck. Pluck could not decide if he liked that or not; Penry seemed to think Pluck was a toy and was a bit aggressive in his preening
Penry definitely needs to work on his social skills!
After nap time, they shared some Harrison's pellets and sat on my shoulder while I did schoolwork. Both boys were stuck to me like glue! Pluck's wings are still clipped so it was really funny to see him lunge himself into the abyss in an attempt to follow Penry when Penry would fly somewhere.
Overall, Penry seems pretty much ambivalent toward Pluck. He will drop him like a hot potato and come to us if we call him (or if he sees millet lol). I was really worried (and still am) that Penry would change forever and forget about me, but today went better than I ever hoped! I know things could still change and that we are doing what is best for Penry by giving him a friend. It was a bittersweet moment to see them meet.
The only downside from today: there are turds EVERYWHERE!!!! Its like the turds are multiplying! I knew to expect more mess, but this is crazy!
And now....enjoy some pictures!
